As a medical oncology/hematology nurse practitioner, Jessica Engel guides people through understanding and coping with their diagnosis, treatments and management of cancer or a blood disorder. She also provides long-term survivorship care.
“I chose a career in health care to help others and contribute to improving someone's health," Engel said.
She also had an interest in medicine, science and problem-solving.
She received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire and her master's degree in nursing from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. She's a certified advanced practice oncology nurse practitioner, breast care nurse and oncology nurse navigator. She also participates in cancer research.
Engel provides person-centered cancer care and focuses on kindness and caring when meeting with her patients.
“I value following people on an ongoing basis. It allows the opportunity to connect with them and their families in a way that helps …me better understand their needs and therefore provide better individualized care," she said. “Part of this customized care is encouraging people to become knowledgeable about their medical condition and finding ways for them to actively participate in their own care based on their needs and abilities."
Cancer care can be difficult or overwhelming for patients, so she also ensures she works with her patients to provide access to resources and education.
“One of my goals is to problem-solve with my patients and find ways to help and support them," she said. “I want to help put them at ease by educating and answering all their questions."​
