Dr. Ji Hwan Kim, MD

I had a persistent cough, and chose to visit Dr Kim, assuming a low-grade infection. Upon examining me, Dr. Kim said he wasn’t comfortable prescribing an antibiotic and sending me home. He ordered an enhanced CAT scan, which showed a "hazy" appearance in a lobe of my lung. But it didn’t look like cancer (which I had never considered...I’m healthy and have no risk factors for cancer). Never-th-less, He referred me to a pulmonary Dr who subsequently ordered a bronchoscopy to be done. Completion of the bronchoscopy indicated no cancer and a mild pneumonia infection. Three days later, the pulmonologist called back and said based upon the CAT scan he wasn’t satisfied with the diagnosis and wanted to do another deeper bronchoscopy, which he completed. This time, my pathology report indicated a diagnosis of "Clearly differentiate mucosal adenocarcinoma with lepidic features" ( an uncommon cancer). This type has a high probability of elimination through surgery. I then went to The… Huntsman Cancer Center where the lower left lobe of my lung was removed via robotic surgery. All indications from pathology were that the cancer was contained...no lymph node or other indication of metastases. DR KIM HAD FOUND IT EARLY ENOUGH! The chief of thoracic surgery at Huntsman asked why Dr. Kim initially chose to do a CAT scan. I said because he is thorough and brilliant. He laughed and said he was genuinely impressed by Dr. Kim’s actions. I can’t thank him enough for his concerned care.
