About Me
Originally from Minnesota, I moved to San Diego at the age of 3 and enjoyed growing up near the ocean with my three sisters. I extended my southern California stay by attending college at the University of California-San Diego in La Jolla, studying and doing research while obtaining my Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry & Cell Biology. I returned to my Minnesota roots as a medical student at The Mayo Clinic Medical School, obtaining my M.D. in 1988.
The next few years were busy ones, with getting married and starting a family while also doing internship and residency training in Pediatrics: at St. Louis Children's Hospital and then Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
Following my Pediatric residency, I did one year of an Anesthesiolgy residency, and decided that I preferred taking care of patients while they are awake. I then worked for a year as a staff physician in the Emergency Department at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, which was an excellent experience to prepare me for …my future role as a Pediatric Hospitalist.
I began working at Kaiser Permanente-South Sacramento in 1993, both in the outpatient pediatric clinic as well as working in the hospital. In the year 2000, I made the change to exclusively working as a Pediatric Hospital Medicine Physician, joining the medical staff in Kaiser Santa Rosa in 2007.
It was with some difficulty that I left my clinic practice and the patients that I had been regularly taking care of, knowing that I would lose that wonderful connection that comes with the continuous involvement in the lives of one's patients and their families over the years. However, I enjoy the challenges and the excitement of the hospital setting: from resuscitating a newborn baby, or helping a child and the family through an acute illness to taking care of a teenager in the Emergency Department.
When I am not working, I spend as much time as possible with my family. My children are growing up far too quickly and I'm savoring every moment I can with them. One of the things that I love doing with them is traveling to other countries, gaining insights and perspectives from experiencing other cultures, as well as just having fun discovering new things together.
Downhill skiing and bicycling are some of the physical activities I most enjoy. However, given a quiet cold day outside, you would most likely find me curled up with a good book or a movie, my two dogs at my feet, and undoubtedly a cup of coffee nearby.
