Dr. Jiping Wang, MD, PhD

Dr Wang performed a small bowel resection on me. There were numerous mistakes made by him prior to surgery and aftercare. The surgery was to remove a tumor about 10 cm x 2 cm from my abdomen. It was of unknown pathology. During the screening appointment additional scans were done to try and determine what it was. None of them were conclusive. At this point he strongly advised having it removed and recommended against a biopsy indicating it had to come out anyways. This was a huge mistake on my part for not standing up and insisting on a biopsy. But I believed Dr Wang being a expert in surgery oncology knew what he was doing. The surgery took place 120 cm of my small bowel were removed. The pathology of the tumor was a Desmoid tumor. I came later to find out there are treatments for Desmoid tumors and surgery is the absolute last resort as they frequently come back. After the surgery he indicated it was a Desmoid tumor and it was gone. I asked for a referral to oncologist which I had to… ask several times as he didnt seem to understand they can re-occur. This from someone who works with Desmoid patients at Dana Farber!!!. After meeting with the oncologist you could see in her eyes the horror that I had this surgery. Even saying she fully expects it to come back and there should absolutely not be another surgery. Gosh I wish I had a biopsy now!!! So on to the actual surgery about a hour before the surgery Dr Wang comes by with paperwork indicating I never signed anything stating I new the risks. I had read online what the risks were so it wasn't a issue. He asks me to sign but never actually goes over the risks!!! I made the request that a catheter not be used due to a previous injury as a result of one. He indicated that was fine. Surgery report one of the first items is a catheter being used. It was removed prior to me waking though so it took a few weeks for me to realize it was still used. I was in the hospital 5 days then sent home still not really able to digest food as I was having diarrhea 10-20x per day. Several days later I was back in the hospital for extreme abdominal pains. I had a bowel leak in the hospital. I was transported from a local hospital to Brigham. Upon arrival I was immediately taken to the ICU where I was prepped for possible surgery. Dr Wangs team seemed very interested in the oral thrush I had!!! No kidding that was the first thing out of the teams mouth when they saw me in the ICU. Ended up not having surgery and they choose to rest my bowels and put me in IV nutrition for 14 days. It became apparent they had no idea what to do with me. Dr Wang told me several times Ive never had this happen. The diarrhea continued in the hospital for the three weeks I was there. Again no answers from the surgical team. They would tell me they put in requests for other Dr’s to see me. None ever came and they would come by ask if they came. They could simply look at my file and see if the Dr actually came. At some point I got labeled “failure to thrive” while I was at the hospital and Dr Wang basically quit coming to see me. Finally went home at my last followup with Dr Wang his parting works were “Sorry Ive never had this happen”. Another big mistake of Dr Wang and the hospital was he indicated on all his paperwork that he removed about 3 ft of my small bowel. Thats the magic number in bowel surgeries going beyond that the person generally experiences short bowel problems and vitamin deficiencies. My paperwork for every appointment I have ever had at the hospital always says I had 3 ft of my small bowel removed. The problem is I had 120cm almost 4 ft. The pathology report is clear as day. Yet no one will correct this error in their system. Oh yea Dr Wang referred me to another surgeon to “fix” me after he messed me up. Dr Wang seriously messed up my life for a surgery that never should have taken place in the first place. If he had done a biopsy rather then jumping into surgery. Oh yea I have to get my gall

Dr Wang was my surgeon at Brigham & Women's over a year ago. He performed a successful resection of a GIST tumor located on my stomach. I had absolute confidence in his ability and a year later, I can confirm that confidence was rewarded in an excellent outcome. I highly recommend Dr Wang.

Dr. Wang explained in detail how he would handle surgical removal of the GIST in the wall of my stomach. He had studied my test results and felt he could remove the GIST with minimal damage to my stomach, contrary to what another surgeon had told me. He took the time to explain everything to me. I felt confidence in him.

I would absolutely recommend this surgeon. He knows how to perform multiple surgeries and is very experienced. He is also down to earth and genuinely a nice guy. Anyone would be fortunate to have him as their surgeon.
