Dr. Joan Torpey Gewirtz, MD

Dr. Gewirtz's expertise is remarkable. Friends, family and clients are doctors-so I have high standards. She exceeded them all. One of few doctors to followup on a referral (think she probably talked cornea specialist into seeing me early Saturday morn before hours)-noteworthy too as she was on vacation. She also considered cost of drugs-told me where to get at least cost. Remarkable-as was her caution in not prescribing a med due to potential interaction. Even pharmacist thought it was safe, but research showed she was right. Her staff is great. I've seen several ophthalmologists this year in NYC and CT-none come close to expertise and care of Dr. Gewirtz and some really bad. See Dr. Gewirtz-she's great!

I made an appointment with Dr. Gewirtz because I have a long-standing and severe case of dry eyes. I have taken various steps throughout the years to alleviate this problem, but nothing was successful. Most recently my Optometrist had prescribed a very expensive medication (Xiidra) but the problem still remained several months after I started to take it. At this point, I asked my wife - who is well placed within the Legal community to know the best doctors in Stamford - to provide a list of Ophthalmologists. At the top of this very short list was Dr. Gewirtz. I was able to get a quick appointment by speaking with Dr. Gewirtz's very friendly and efficient front office. My initial appointment with Dr. Gewirtz was outstanding. She did not rush our discussion, nor did she use pedantic medical-speak. She was clear and concise and we settled upon a sustainable treatment strategy. Fast-forward a few months and I couldn't be happier with the results. The course of treatment that she provided… me has FINALLY given me relief for my dry eyes and I no longer wake up in pain with my one (or both) of my eyes fused shut. It's important to make a wise choice when seeking proper medical care. Dr. Gewirtz is a very wise choice.

I went to see Dr Gewirtz for a dry eyes exam and brought my 10 year old son and was REFUSED to be seen because he was with me. As my son sat quietly (as he generally does) playing games or watching videos on his tablet Dr. Gewirtz said that he must stay in the waiting room ALONE! She said that she could not have him in the room since she was DISTRACTED by him/children. I tried to explain that he will just sit there and will not touch or do anything - she just said "I will not see you with him!" Very rude and no "bedside manner." Coming from Greenwich - children have never been an issue with other appointments, etc. and I would obviously not bring him to other types of Doctors appointments or meetings - but an eye exam?! If this was any indication of her patient empathy and understanding I am glad I have not started any exams/treatments with her.

Nothing but the best experience & great eye care! She takes time to explain everything to her patients! Office staffs exceptionally nice & welcoming!

This physician is the most caring, generous, intelligent, expert in the field and thorough I have ever been seen by.

I have never had a Doctor who is as detailed and careful as Dr. Gewirtz. She takes time to explain the reason for everything that she does and is truly concerned that her patients know the important things about their eyes and eye care. What a find!
