Summary

Dr. Joanna Gratton offers telehealth appointments for the states of North Carolina, Virginia, and Maine. For those who are located near her office location, in person visits are available.

From a very young age, I aspired to a career in medicine. My parents, a neurosurgeon and a nurse, nurtured my curiosity by enrolling me in anatomy classes and providing dissection specimens. The human body captivated me. Challenges in middle and high school led me to withdraw from formal education and obtain my GED. A transformative 30-day Outward Bound course in the Rocky Mountains instilled resilience and determination in me and made me realize that I could do anything.

Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, welcomed my unconventional path. I rekindled my passion for medicine and developed a keen interest in natural healing. Initially drawn to naturopathic medicine, I discovered Osteopathy, which resonated with my belief in holistic treatment. I graduated from the premed program in 2002. From there, I went to medical school at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine at Virginia Tech, immersing myself in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and cultivating a holistic perspective on health. My rotations in rural Southwest Virginia enriched my understanding of the interplay between culture, community, and healing. I graduated in 2007.

I went on to do my residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. My primary intention was family medicine, but psychiatry revealed my true calling: establishing profound connections with patients and addressing their emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Following a family medicine internship, I transitioned to psychiatry residency at Maine Medical Center, a decision that has remained steadfast. During residency, motherhood enriched my understanding of presence and equilibrium. I’ve engaged with underserved populations, integrating medical and psychiatric care to optimize outcomes. I’ve worked in an eating disorders clinic, headed up Assertive Community Teams, worked with several inpatient hospitals, and served as medical director in a couple of those. When I got tired of the politics and bureaucracy of being a medical director, I decided to return to my first love, simply being a doctor, dealing with patients and their families one-on-one to bring about positive changes in their lives.

Turning fifty marked a personal and professional transition. I recognized the need to integrate my knowledge and experiences. So, in early 2025, I launched my private practice, Stillpoint Psychiatry in Hendersonville, NC.  My private practice allows me to harmonize traditional psychiatry, natural medicine, and Osteopathic principles for holistic care.

Patients describe me as a compassionate, hardworking, creative, relatable, and approachable psychiatrist. They appreciate my ability to simplify treatment plans, integrate nutrition, nature, and psychotherapy, and explore various avenues to optimal health.

At Stillpoint Psychiatry, we value and respect each individual. Together, we’ll collaboratively discover their unique path to healing, personal growth, and resilience.
