Dr. Joanne Renelle Brooks, MD

TW assault Saw her years ago during the initial process of getting lupus diagnosed. She wanted to do a physical and pap smear on me. I consented, but I had never had a pap smear done, so I was nervous about it. Never been sexually active either. She ended up using this giant looking plastic speculum and I felt overwhelmed by the size because I didn't know how this was going to work out. Immediately once the procedure started, I was in overwhelming pain. I was crying and screaming on the table for her to stop, and she didn't. She condescendingly told me that she was almost done. After, she asked why I was crying and I screamed that it was because she hurt me, all she said was "Awww" condescendingly again. Like I was a child instead of in my 20s. After I had changed back into my clothes and was sitting while shaking and crying, the nurse got my dad from the waiting room and she condescendingly said to him "Aww, I'm not her friend right now." She didn't even say sorry or show any… concern for how this experience affected me. I avoided getting cancer screenings for years after this. I've had panic attacks and flashbacks whenever my annual appointment comes up, because I know I'm going to be asked about my next pap test being overdue. I was terrfied of going to an OBGYN to get the depo shot and the dreaded procedure again, because I was told by primary care physicians that it is a requirement to get a pap smear before you can get birth control pills or depo (which it is NOT according to my OBGYN!). I finally found an OBGYN that is respectful of me and it took me 3 years to warm up to her to even consider getting a pap done. I told her my prior experience with Dr. Brooks. They told me what I described is assault. I was assaulted. For once I wasn't made to feel crazy about what happened to me. Previously whenever I told doctors about this, I was made to feel like I was exaggerating. My OBGYN is wonderful and she listens to my concerns and fears. I was taken seriously. This time I was believed and I finally came to the realization and acceptance I have PTSD from that event. And now I feel like I can leave this review about her, because potential patients need and have the right to know. Shame on Dr. Brooks. Now I'm ever more furious this happened to me and I hope potential patients avoid her, especially if they have to get a pap smear done. Needless to say I never went to Dr Brooks again after that. She was a horrible doctor in this case and unbelievably unprofessional.

I appreciate Dr. Brooks engagement. She is wonderful and takes her time during my visits to examine me and she gives me great advice.

I feel that having a smart, knowledgeable and curious physician is crucial to getting the best care. Dr. Joanne Brooks is that physician. She is personable but she is also very intelligent. She takes her job seriously but not so much that she has lost her humanity. She is simply a great doctor. You won't be disappointed.

Dr. Brooks is one of the best Doctor's that I have had in a long time... She's great!

I was very impressed with Dr. Brooks. She was prompt, very professional and friendly. I felt that she spent time with me and really listened to my concerns. I had to bring my baby with me and Dr. Brooks was very kind, even when my baby was a little fussy. She even came back to tell me the result of a test instead of just sending in the nurse. I would recommend her any day.
