Kaiser is not a facility that you want to go to for a diagnosis. My wife and I tired Kaiser for a year to 'save money' (the savings were not substantial, even with $5 copays and $5 prescriptions). Insurance premiums were not much lower than PPOs, and the service was HORRENDOUS!
I went to the ER once, and from the time I entered until I was seen was 4 HOURS! The population of the room circulated at least TWICE before I got in. They use a triage basis in the ER room, and many people went ahead of me and another guy, that didn't seem to have more severe issues than us. There was no reason for them to put us last, but they did! He was as perplexed as I was!
Kaiser's communication absolutely SUCKS! There were many times I was called by the pharmacy because a prescription was 'ready', so I went to pick it up. Upon arrival, you have to stand in line to check in with the pharmacy (usually not very long, 5 to 10 minutes). After checking in, I was told it would take about 15 to 20 minutes to… fill the prescription, so I would tell them I would be back in that amount of time. After waiting the required time, I would go back and wait in line to pick up my prescription (5 minutes). Upon arrival at the counter, the pharmacist aid would inform me that the medicine was OUT OF STOCK! (Total time wasted with commute, wait to sign in, wait for prescription to be filled, wait in line to get prescription, and return home = 1 1/2 hours)! Why even bother to CALL if they medicine is out of stock??? And why call if you are going to make me wait to GET it?!? Like I said, this happened more than once!
DO NOT USE KAISER IF YOU CAN HELP IT! This is the only group I know of where you pay like it's a PPO, but get treated like an HMO! You can't change doctors, and you have to see a general before you can see a specialist!
The doctors are generally BOTTOM of the line! No matter how many years 'experience' they have, they always seem unsure, and unknowledgeable!
I can't totally dump on Kaiser because I think they have a lot of good ideas to save money, but because their people are so unmotivated, undisciplined, or uninformed, it just doesn't work out in your best interest.
I can't put my finger on what the issue is exactly, but their communication sucks and their people all seem like perpetual interns!
Again, do not use Kaiser if you can avoid it!
About my ratings: they are for Dr. Kang, not Kaiser in general. Making appointments at Kaiser is easy (4 stars), but you may not get an appointment for 1 to 1 1/2 months! They keep things moving in almost all areas, so I gave them 4 stars for promptness. I gave her a single star for diagnosis because she never really had to diagnose me for anything; she just had to maintain treatment for already present conditions. I am not sure she could confidently diagnose, though, so I gave her 1 star for lack of confidence. She is a very nice person, and talks the talk, so I gave her 4 stars for bedside manner. As for 'Spends Time with Me', I think Kaiser keeps their doctors moving along and restricts the amount of time they can spend with patients, so I can't really blame her (or the others) for that. Finally 'Follows Up After Visit' just isn't there for any Kaiser provider....PERIOD! (Although I will say lab results are VERY prompt! Many times, test results are available on line before you can even get home to check to them! One thing Kaiser gets right is data availability online! MEGA KUDOS to them for that!)
Overall, though, not worth it! They really seem like the future face of medicine where you bang your head on the wall, but nobody every answers....
