I wouldn’t trust anyone else!

My children and I have been seeing Dr Mayhew for 8 years. All of my kids ages 15, 11 and 2 respond great to her and respect her advice. She responds urgently when needed and goes above and beyond always. We are very happy with the treatment we receive under her care.

I was a patient of Dr. Mayhew's for more than a decade. I used to love talking with her and love how she wanted to try other things instead of going straight for medication or surgery. She even came highly recommended by two of my friends. But over the last year and a half she seems to have really changed. Her staff turns over constantly now (besides Melissa-who is always amazing), I've even heard her yelling at them. She misdiagnosed me when I had a muscle tear, and sent me for a bunch of expensive testing (2 CT scans, blood panels, etc). She even had me go see a specialist for my kidneys, he correctly diagnosed me with a muscle tear and was very surprised that she missed it, especially since she's an osteopath. When I went back to her as a follow up to that appointment she acted as though she knew the whole time it was a muscle tear. I should not have ignored all those red flags, but having been a patient of hers for so long I continued to see her. Fast forward a year, I had an… ongoing sinus infection that 3 rounds of antibiotics couldn't get rid of. She missed the initial diagnosis of that too (an ARNP at an urgent care caught it). My final straw with her was when I went back in to ask for an ENT referral. She flat out refused. She gave me the same spiel about what I could do to avoid infection, but this was the fourth this year (had three the year before and four the year before that). When I said it wasn't working and I wanted to go see an ENT she told me surgery never fixes anything and wouldn't approve of it if I went that route. Then, and this takes the cake, she told me the only way to get rid of the active infection was to mediTATE. I was so shocked by her behavior at that appointment and what she told me to do for a sinus infection that I left without really saying much to her. I am so sad that I won't be going back to her office. By the way, the ENT is helping me so much now, after I got a referral from my new doctor.

Dr. Mayhew is a nice and genuinely caring person, and I like her and her staff, which is why I stayed with her so long. Dr. Mayhew loves to have students at her clinic, and she seems to love to prescribe medications. I asked for a medication to help lose weight, and she thought I should be put on Metformin diabetes drug for fun. Another time a medicine caused me to have body shocks when I was going to sleep. Often I wouldn't even pick up the scrip after seeing her. One visit a student got my weight wrong by 50 pounds, and the doctor started discussing diabetes with me until I asked what my weight was listed at -- and it was wrong! The last visit, I told the same student who appeared to be hired on, my symptoms, but it was as though she didn't share with the doctor as the doctor started saying I clearly had one issue (she wished she had a student doctor because it was a classic case of it) - and suggested we ignore it or do surgery. Then when I shared what I had told the help of other… symptoms, she changed her diagnosis. She sent me in for testing, but then (same visit) diagnosed me with a condition I didn't even have - when I visited the ER that Saturday AND Sunday after being put on a very restrictive liquid diet. She also does not use any technology in her billing or charts - you may not email or find out results without requesting paper copy. She also lets her medical assistants bring their babies to work - while progressive - what are they missing for care and being a doctor's office. The day I visited there was a toddler and a large dog behind the very small front office space. Each call I made or received had a screaming baby in the background. This is a doctor's office, not a day care center. Additionally, the office is only open 9-3:20 and they are not open on Fridays.

This so called Dr. Would not address my reason for being at her office bacterial infection. Instead was more concerned with my weight, I will be the first to admit after 2 children I could shed weight. However being condescending and out and out rude is a first for me from a professional. Dragging my perfectly healthy children into her tirade was also a bit unprofessional. When her abusive and derisive rant was finished and I was visibly upset she tried more then once to push me onto mood stabilizers. I firmly told her I had no intention PERIOD of taking these kinds of drugs. God forbid you disagree with this quack then your really in for it. I left with a hand written note with what foods I should be eating and a comment on how FRENCH WOMEN DON'T GET FAT! How that was relevant to the problem I was there for I will never know. After this I was called and told she was giving me a prescription for blood pressure medication and a follow up appointment. I check my pressure daily and do not… need it and the side effects are truly not to be desired. I cancelled the follow up appointment the office charged me 40$ for not showing up. When confronted with this error on the part of the office, I am being given the run around. I already have a great new Dr at Tumwater family practice and would like to help prevent others from making the same mistake I did. DO NOT GO TO JOANNE MAYHEW.!! Absolutely the worst person I have met in a long time, the fact she is in a career that calls for caring for others is astounding. Based on her reviews she must pick and choose her desired patients and try to drive off the undesirables.

She is the most amazing doctor I have ever had listens and treats you incredibly well

I am writing this review because Dr. Mayhew has provided me and my family the highest quality care imaginable. In this era of corporate "care", she runs an office of very caring people who take the time to learn your name, family dynamics and do full person medicine. I now know what that entails and will go no where else. Of note, as far as my decade of experience with this office, they have never sold anything there, never encouraged more prescriptions- Just a great place.

I went to this dr I had some rosa ear and went for a second opinion that I desperately needed, she claims specialized in sports, so I went, she checked me and was more interested in selling me some device and directed me to make an appointment for it, which is was not interested. While she was standing charting her notes, by hand, she dropped off her file; so I quickly bent to pick it up for her. She immediately kicked her leg to stop my hand saying don't touch it according to her that was impetigo. When I told her I would like her opinion on a shoulder procedure I was going considering. She asked me to make another appointment for that and left the room. So much for the purpose of my visit. The same day I was scheduled for a physical. I returned for the physical which took from the time she walked into the room to the time she closed the door behind her 11 minutes. The physical was less than that she charted notes and again talked to me about the device she had been trying to sell… me. The big business of medicine!!!

This is not a doctor who values current research, listens to patients, or uses data. She values what she can bill your insurance or get as a kickback from the pharmaceutical companies for all the scrips she pushes more than what you tell her. She does not belong to the AMA or have any board certifications. If you dare question her about anything, she will make snide remarks and treat you disrespectfully. Patient beware.

I had her as a doctor for about 2 months and I had been experiencing many side effects from the medicines she prescribed me. I ended up stopping them and she seemed upset and angry when I told her. She didn't really listen to the reasons why I chose to stop taking them and cut me off a lot. She even went as far as arguing with me to discredit the side effects I was experiencing. It made me feel like I was the only one in the world that had bad side effects from anti depressants and anxiety meds, which is so not true. She seemed more concerned about what drugs I was taking rather than my wellbeing and my ability to listen to my own body.
