Dr. Jody Clayton Olson, MD

So today I was accused by Dr. Olson of posting a “scathing” review about him. Since I had never actually done so, I will take the opportunity to do so now. I understand now why he essentially dropped all my care almost a year ago. (Not ordering routine labs, failing to order an ultrasound prior to today’s appointment, etc.) Apparently when someone is a narcissist they cannot handle any reviews that are not five star. Both Dr. Olson and his assistant who sat at the desk typing into a computer were both so unprofessional today that I am nearly speechless. She kept shaking her head and rolling her eyes as the conversation about my review unfolded. She was not present at the original appointment, which I pointed out to her today. At my first appointment, Olson was quite self absorbed and I left his office knowing I had not been listened to nor heard. During my first appointment he literally got up in my face and essentially “threatened” to order a liver biopsy. Not offered. Not suggested,… threatened. I felt unsafe to the degree that at today’s appointment I had my husband sit in such a way as to put him between me and Olson and had already discussed with my husband that I would not be allowing Olson to touch/examine me today. Olson stated during my first appointment that my previous hepatologist at Vanderbilt was most likely mistaken in their diagnosis but did not make any attempt to diagnose anything himself, just continued treatment for something he implied I did not have. My husband witnessed both appointments in their entirety. Today I was basically dismissed as a patient by mutual agreement because Olson was unwilling to say anything remotely like -I’m sorry you did not feel heard and even more sorry that you felt unsafe-, and because I am unwilling to be seen by someone who does not listen to me and also gets up in my face. His ego is bruised because I gave him a one star review and now I have no hepatologist. Scathing review? After today he deserves an excoriating review. If you want to see a hepatologist you can be certain will not listen to you and will drop you if you give a one star review, Olson is your man. KU apparently reads all of these reviews and even discussed mine with Olson (which I suspect is why he got so upset- perhaps he got disciplined?) but made no attempt to contact me in any way for clarification, or to gain an understanding of the situation. So they clearly care enough about online reviews to monitor them, but not enough about patients to attempt to rectify a potential problem or grievance. Reviews should be an opportunity for a doctor and facility to find ways to improve care and communication with patients but that is not what happened in this case. Rather narcissistic, sad, and petty, when a doctor who doesn’t like your review drops you as a patient. I will be filing a formal complaint.

Dr. Olson was not helpful. He was not interested in listening to me and had nothing to offer in the way of helping me deal with my stage 3 with bridging fibrosis Autoimmune Hepatitis other than to keep doing what am doing which is not helping. He was not interested in my symptoms or how my quality of life is affected. Very disappointing visit as I had read so many glowing reviews. He even suggested that my previous hepatologist in Nashville at Vanderbilt had gotten my diagnosis wrong ?? He likes himself very much. Refused to shake me husband’s hand at the end of the visit. He looked right at my husband’s outstretched hand, then turned and walked out the door. I am not impressed. Does not listen. It was clear that he felt I was a waste of his time. I was desperate for help and felt like I got less than nothing. Plenty of disprespect though

He’s such an unbelievably great doctor. He always calls/e-mails me very quickly. He’s always doing his best to provide me with the best care possible. He even acted as my PCP when I was trying to switch to another office, while working in the transplant office. He’s always just sooo positive! He has great bedside manner and always sit to address all issues and throughly explain things and answer all of my questions. His nurses are equally as great!! Especially Sara! I’m going to be kinda sad when I get my transplant and no longer have to visit with Dr. Olson and his team! But at least I’m blessed to have him caring for me during this very rough patch in my life.

this fine doctor is very passionate about his calling as a critical-care liver transplantation doctor. i felt comfortable with his gentle demeanor and the firmness of his guidance to get me on the liver transplant list - and beyond. i will be forever grateful to him and to my donor.

Our relationship with Dr. Jody Olson has been a disaster. My son was diagnosed with a blood clot in the portal vein off the liver last February at KU Medical Center. He is Crohns patient and is under the care of Mayo Clinic for the Crohns. Mayo Clinic scanned Mitchell for a cyst and the liver showed up on this scan. Crohns specialist from Mayo wanted us to follow up with a liver specialist in KC because the scan showed a concern with my sons liver. We have followed up with Dr. Olson because this is the office that first diagnosed my son with the blood clot at the portal vein outside the liver back in February. It is currently October 19th. No one has read the scan done at Mayo from last May. We have called several times. We have gotten many excuses such as we done have the disc from Mayo. We have ordered the disc from Mayo but it got lost. We have the disc from Mayo but I haven't had time to read it and etc. I have personally told them if they don't have the disc I will… drive to Mayo in MN and get one and personally hand it to them. My son talked to Dr. Jody Olson face to face almost 3 weeks ago. He claims he did not know all of this was going on. He said he needed to fire his nurse and he would read the scan and send my son for an MRI to see what was going on with his liver in a few days. ( By the way we have also been sent to 2 MRI's by this office but they didn't have their paper work done so my son could not get his MRI because insurance said they would not cover it. We called the insurance company and they said it is approved on insurance company's end but the doctor's office needs to complete their paper work). We have now been waiting going on 3 weeks for Dr. Olson to call my son. We have also called the office several times during the last 3 weeks. This battle has been now going on for months. Looks like we will have to find a Liver Specialist at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Its a shame that KU advertises excellent medical care when we cant find a competent doctor to even read the results of a scan done by Mayo Clinic almost 6 months later. I pray that my son is okay. He has been having many side effects from the Elliquis that this office has prescribed. We want him off the blood thinners but cannot progress to this until the scan from Mayo is read and also until we currently see what is going on with his liver. My son almost died last December. We are hoping that we don't have to wait until he is at death's door again before he is given decent respect and quality healthcare that he deserves. Shame on you Dr. Olson.

Dr. Olson spent 2 hours with me going over my history....FROM HIS MEMORY on my first visit. His office and coordinator are so easy to work with and you do not have to wait long for call backs. I trust this man with my life and have already done that. He is the best!

Highly recommended! Very caring! Great bedside manner!
