Dr. Joel Edward Richter, MD

I have been trying to get in touch with this doctor's office to make an appt an have yleft multiple messages and has never received a callback, nor has my doctor's office. This reflects on the doctor bcuz he hired them. I strongly recommend going with another doctor.

Terrible bedside manner. My surgeon referred me to him for some testing. I brought my records with me but he wouldn't even see me to go over them because I was unable to tolerate the manometry test. At that point he talked down to me and basically told me not to come back if I couldn't complete the test. He also dismissed my reflux issues without me going over my medical history with him. Completely arrogant and full of hot air. Because he is a leading expert in his field, he thinks he can treat patients like crap.

Dr. Richter was, by far, the poorest physician I've ever met. First, he told me he didn't believe me when I explained what I was experiencing. Then after all the testing proved that I was correct, he told me there was nothing he could do and said I was to go home and pray. Prior to that, Dr. Richter stated he was the best Gastro doctor in the world. He listed all the important doctors he knew so I would be impressed. Dr. Richter has some social development issues. No empathy, narsisstic, cold, God complex. It's been, at least, 10 years since I met with him. I'm sorry to see he is still practicing medicine. By the way, there are much better doctors out there.

I really was hoping to finally have found a specialist that would help fix my long standing swallowing troubles, but man was I disappointed. I don't know if I rubbed this man the wrong way - or he was having a REALLY bad day.. but he was soooo rude, and aggressive- every response to my questions was inappropriate. He name calls other doctors, and is very dismissive is you aren't bowing at his feet thanking him for treating you. What doctor says " I don't need your business, I have plenty of people lined up actually wanting to get fixed- so you can just go back to your regular doctor or another one , whatever you'd like". It was clear to me that if I didn't jump at the chance to have him do procedure on me like asap, he would likely turn me away in future for any treatment.. but after my experience with him I don't feel comfortable going back to him anyways. I'm not at ALL discrediting his qualifications, he may be the best in class with the procedures he performs and/or a top notch… doctor. I'll never know,.. cause his bedside manner is worst in class and I won't be his patient.

Knowledgeable. Professional. Cares about his people. Takes time reviewing records before first meeting. Organized, clean and calm office speaks volumes about Dr. Richter. No unnecessary testing. I’ve been chronically ill for most of the last twelve years and in that time have probably seen close to 25 top doctors. My overall experience with Dr. Richter was the best. Be careful of other gastro’s in the Tampa Bay area with inflated review scores: “all that glitters is not gold."

I have a serious swallowing issue, he has taken good care of me.

Dr. Richter is severely lacking in bedside manner. He is extremely condescending and flat out rude. After waiting 45 minutes past my appointment time to see him, he suggested that I see another type of Doctor as well and when I said I had one closer to my home, he told me that there were "no good doctors" that practice in the Pinellas County area. He also said, "If I wanted to remain his patient, [I needed to] do as [he] instructed."

Diagnosed my disease of achalasia that others missed for over five years

Dr. Richter is the most knowledgeable doctor I have ever been to. From my experience and everything I understand, he is the best gastroenterologist in the U.S. and is world renowned!! I had been to 4 different doctors who could not determine what was wrong with me. After several tests, Dr. Richter diagnosed me with gastroparesis. He was extremely efficient, knowledgeable, caring and best doctor I have ever had. I would highly recommend him.
