Dr. Johannes A Bernbeck, MD

Previous Orthopedic Surgeon referred Dr Bernbeck. Good choice. Dr Bernbeck fixed the previous surgery that was causing problems. He was very thorough in planning and post op care. Excellent doctor.

Done in 1997, 20 yrs later. I was in so much pain before the surgery I was no longer walking. After surgery I was expected to go home the same day. I had no strength to do it. Required another dr to allow me to stay at the hospital overnight. He may not know about bedside manners, can be very blunt in his response. However, he gave me my life back and for that I am grateful.

Horrible bedside manner ! Would not go to this Dr ! When went to see him , he said I will do a disc replacement on my neck and you will be in a neck brace for 6 weeks . Woke up from surgery and I had No brace on and asked the nurses why they said the Dr said you didn't need on BUT all his other patients were wearing one ! Seen him a few weeks later he got mad cause I was wearing one , I had asked the nurses to give me one ! All he wanted to know was who gave me that brace and I should go back to work after ONLY 2 weeks after surgery ! Plz don't go to this Dr and suffer the fate I did !

I will never go back to this Dr. His bedside manner is horrible !!! He forgets that recovery is the hardest part of doing a surgery !!!!

Absolutely rude and presumptuous. Left a post-op patient leave the hospital, refusing to provide pain meds. Worst bedside manner I've ever experienced from a physician in my life. Good surgeon, though.

I first saw the Dr in 2013 after being involved in an auto accident. For over 2 yrs I tried pain management. The pain has become unmanageble to where it hurts to take deep breath, so I decided another visit was in order.I expected him to ask about my pain and how it was affecting my daily life.What I got was "tell me about your weight" . When I asked what he meant , his replied "you weigh twivpce as much as you should, stop eating". I know I am overweight but the neck injury has prevented me from even keeping up with housework!I went in vulnerable and looking for relief and instead I could barely drive home through the tears. Not sure he is the surgeon for me.There are at least a dozen nicer ways to get his point across.

Appointment was 2 months out but understandable. I was supposed to be getting an appointment with "best of the best". Disappointed in Dr. Bernback diagnosis and bedside manner. I have three herniated disc (L5 is 10mm) and have been in severe pain for about 3 months. After he looked at my MRI all he had to say was... it's all about CONTROL.... controlling what goes in your mouth". I can write you a referral to have bariatric surgery. Okay so I'm overweight 60+ pounds and I know taking off some weight will help... but I was very offended in his choice of words. I left there feeling worse than when I went in. I have lost some weight (30 lbs) and still in just as much pain as I was the day I left his office. Frustrated and wanting a second opinion.

I was told by a person that worked with him at USC that he was a perfectionist and a master craftsman at his work. He also told me Dr Berbeck expects nothing less from those around him. I am not a surgeon but my images look very precise and well crafted. He did an amazing job and gave me back my life with much less pain and much more function. His PA Mr Hendry is amazing and personable. The are a great team. The only negative was waiting an additional 4 months in pain to get on his surgical schedule.
