Dr. John Thomas Adkins, MD

Today was my second appt with Dr Adkins. After waiting an hour and a half I was in his presence for five minutes. Prior to the appt I had learned my CT was clear. With no more health concerns I was fully ready to discuss trying to get pregnant. I’m 28 with endometriosis which presents complications and risks. Also, I’m medicated for anxiety. I asked how to go about weaning off my medication. He walked out the door, saying he’d have to check if it came in a lower dose. About 7 minutes later he re-enters with my discharge paperwork and remains standing, making it clear it’s time for me to leave. He hasn’t explained how to taper off my anxiety meds. I haven’t been able to ask questions about ectopic pregnancies. He makes a woman feel utterly dismissed.

I've had 2 appts with Dr. Atkins; one at each location. He was much more at ease and timely at the Georgetown campus but still seemed rushed and pushy with his own agenda. The Lexington location ended up being over an hour wait AFTER I had already met with the nurse. He seemed very harried, rushed, constantly cut me off, and quick to dismiss my concerns. I was treated more like an unwelcomed hassle to his day instead of a genuine person. He did not take time to explain treatment options so that I could participate in the decision making, he merely offered different dosages and options and then sent in a script for something that I had to call the pharmacy to learn about. The office staff and nurses were all wonderful, but I will not be seeing this doctor again. I think that he probably also had other service obligations at the hospital location and was, therefore, not focused on clinic patients like he is at the Georgetown location.

Our first pregnancy, he didn’t spend any time with us, didn’t ask us if we had any questions, had two visits with him before He said I miscarried and maybe spent 8 minutes total with him! Such a disappointment. Which also our ultrasound tech told us she couldn’t find a heartbeat but our ultrasound lasted 1 minute... we ended up going to the er and they found our babies heartbeat!!! Dr. Atkins had our nurse give us d&c paperwork and I signed them not really understanding. What was going on.. they didn’t tell us I had a miscarriage.. and the tech didn’t even measure my baby! It was truly an awful experience.. if you’re a first time mommy please do your research before deciding an OBGYN.. I could’ve lost my pregnancy because they were too lazy to look into it.
