He completed a general medicine internship at the Hospital del Sureste in Tabasco, Mexico, and for the next three years worked as a physician in Brazil, Kenya, and Sudan. His training continued with a pediatric internship and residency at the University of Chicago Children's Hospital, followed by a clinical and research fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He has been a physician volunteer in Armenia, Haiti, and at the AmeriCares HIV Summer Camp for Children in New York.
