Dr. John Stuart Dirksen, MD

Unhelpful. Overmedicates. Has a reputation for over medicating. Not a good doctor.

He’s not a reputable person! Had a very negative personal experience with him. He’s not honest and cannot be trusted. I certainly wouldn’t recommend him to anyone!

I have been seeing Dr. Dirksen for many years. He has helped me with multiple disorders, such as, ADHD, anxiety, depression, PTSD, bipolar, and a few other disorders. Over the years he has listened to and worked with me until we found the right combination of medications to help with all of my mental/emotional disorders. There are times, even after all these years, that I have to tweak a few things and he is always open to changing medications if mine aren't working together well. He is always on time. I've never waited for him but a few minutes on occasion (usually because someone before me was late or, like me, talks too much. :/ He is very professional, yet very personal and relatable. Though he knows and understands all of my problems and prescribes my medication accordingly, I also recommend a great therapist for those who suffer from any or all of these disorders. There have been times I was suicidal and the combination of my therapist (Gwen Smith) and Dr. Dirksen were… crucial. My prayer is that those who feel overwhelmed by life and have a hard time coping will call Dr. Dirksen or another mental/emotional care professional for relief. My past PRIDE NEVER rid me of one suicidal thought nor did it help with any disorder I have to cope with. I thank God for the gift of medical professionals of all kinds for their knowledge, wisdom, and compassion. They only have 5 stars, but out of 5 I still give him 10!!. :)

Good Dr

Dr. Dirksen is very knowledgeable, kind, and understanding. He listens attentively when I describe my symptoms without making me feel as though I am wasting his time. Dr. Dirksen takes the time to explain why I feel certain ways and does his best to help me improve my mental health. I wouldn't want to go to another doctor.

I have never been treated with more disrespect by a doctor in my life. I went to him for 5 years, he knew i was struggling and one day i went in to a termination letter for a bill of $170 which we came up with a payment plan, and they must have forgotten. I paid out of pocket evert visit and it took a lot of work, with no medication for my conditions to find a medicaid doctor. They didn't offer to help and on top of that made sure the entire building knew what my balance was. it was very unprofessional and seemed unethical and i plan to take further action as my conditions worsened. This man does not care about his patients he cares about money and from most doctors they do their best to help their patients. I am still in shock of the manner i was terminated. It really made m head spin literally but also, because he was the puppeteer of my brain for so long and not help me find a new doc. This could have ended my life

Over medicated me. I went to a size "0." Found out later it was just early menopause! Thank God I lived!

This man does indeed "practice" medicine. Indeed, perhaps one day he might get it right but I doubt it as his motive is not helping patients but collecting money. He is judgmental,sexist, and he will drop a patient if he feels any liability on his part. He is currently seeing a friend's brother and he sounds like he is in the same shape I was in when I saw him. He is grossly over medicated. His symptoms are a manifestation of the medications he takes as were mine. Dirksen upped medication when the medication was in fact causing the symptoms. I did not realize that until I stopped taking all of them which happened when he dropped me with no refills. His "advice" to me, in a letter, was, seek help. He is unprofessional and did not have the professionalism to terminate in person; he did it in a letter. I would not see him for a scrape on my knee.

I am a middle-aged educated, professional female with a history of depression and anxiety. Please note I am not in the habit of simply skipping appointments or blithely ignoring financial obligations. My regular physician referred me on an urgent basis because I refused hospitalization after I was suddenly abandoned by my husband and had become acutely suicidal. I was seen by Dr. Dirksen, began my recovery process, and managed to avoid inpatient treatment. However, after a brief reconciliation, my husband abandoned me a second time -- only this time he left me homeless, destitute and in even worse mental shape than before. I lost my ten-year job (and my health insurance) due to my inability to function. I had no address, phone, income, food, etc. and slept in my vehicle or the homeless shelter. Consequently, due to the severe hardship, disorientation and distress of my situation, I was unaware that I had missed an outstanding follow-up appointment with Dr. Dirksen. I also did… not realize I had a small outstanding balance despite having paid my office visit co-pays in full. I do not know what this unpaid fee was for. After many months I managed to get housing, but I was in bad shape with severe shock and grief (as well as PTSD) and I finally saved up enough cash to afford the full out-of-pocket fee to see Dr. Dirksen once again for badly-needed psychiatric treatment. When I called, the receptionist told me I had "been fired as a patient" by the Dr. because I had missed an appointment and also had an outstanding balance. I tried to explain that I had been enduring severe extenuating hardships (and subsequent mental impairment) and was not aware of a missed appointment or unpaid fee. I asked if he would agree to see me if I immediately paid the outstanding balance along with the regular visit charges. I was NOT given a chance to explain what had happened to me (a second abandonment, homelessness, etc.), and the terse receptionist dispassionately stated that there was nothing I could do or say, that it was "his policy" and he would refuse to treat me again, no exceptions. I never did get to go back despite my needing help then more than at any other time in my life. I am still unable to work and the only psychiatric care I've received has been from state employees on a charity basis, which is quite limited and a far cry from private-practice care (particularly with my long-term mental-health history). I now see a General Practitioner and have finally become somewhat stable on basic medications, after several revolving-door inpatient psychiatric hospitalizations and nearly a year (without success) of finding any real psychiatric help. So, I guess I wish to state that whatever respect I have for Dr, Dirksen's qualifications and expertise has been greatly tarnished by his/his staff's refusal to even hear my explanation and their total lack of compassion, concern or attempt at understanding. I would recommend him only to people who aren't at risk for having their whole lives fall out from underneath them due to unforeseen circumstances. Outside of that, he is a competent and capable doctor.

Dr. Dirksen quite simpy was a Godsend. I began seeing him over 10 years ago. HE was the only doctor I had been to that accurately diagnosed my work related stress disorder and depression. He placed me on medications and in a very short while I was feeling actually normal for the first time in years. Very few panic attacks anymore. A great feeling of worth. I am a new man and I have Dr. Dirksen and Gods grace to thank for that. Now Dr. John sees me quarterly for medicine management and to talk with me and see how I am doing. He actually cares. I think Dr. John is one of the best in his field and highly recommend him and his staff to anyone in need. His front office staff are friendly and always smiling. Thank you Dr. Dirksen for all that you have done and continue to do for me. YOu are a truly great Physician and I consider a friend as well.
