Dr. John Carl Eggenberger, MD

Dr. Eggenberger is an excellent surgeon, I appreciate his skills and knowledge in my area of medical issues. He is so caring and kind, and he has respect for the patients. Issues can be embarrassing and he makes sure you are comfortable and talks through the exam to keep you calm. He does not rush your visit, takes time to listen and respond to questions. I appreciate him as my surgeon.

I had emergency surgery for a midgut volvulus done by Dr Eggenberger. I was very nervous because my prior 2 GI surgeries were done there by a different surgeon who retired. Dr. Eggenberger was absolutely wonderful and I am a very complicated case. The hard part was dealing with the fellows and residents when he was on vacation or away. They at one point sent in psych thinking I had an eating disorder when I actually have a rare disease, Chronic Intestinal Pseudo Obstruction that causes extremely slow motility and signs and symptoms of an intestinal blockage. Since they had never seen that illness before they jumped to the conclusion that I must not want to eat. Even with procedures like barium follow through series that showed how slow my motility was and with CT imaging documenting dilated bowel loops with air fluid levels. If I ever need surgery again, which I hope I never do, I'd go back to Dr Eggenberger. He is very experienced and had knowledge of motility disorders and the wisdom… that comes with experience.

I have know Dr Eggenberger since 1996. He is always been caring, did go through a time at St Joes when he was two busy to see me. But since that he has been right there when you need him. I would recommend his to my family member

He did an outpatient surgery on my mother and 3 days later she was in the hospital in sepsis. She was on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks and was in the hospital twice and in 2 different rehab facilities for 2 months. He admitted he used poor judgement and made the wrong decision in how he closed up her wound and did not leave it open to heal from the inside out. 10 months later she is still suffering pain and the wound is still open. This has made her pretty much disabled and she has to have 24/7 care. This man has ruined my mother’s quality of life for the duration of her life.

although Dr Eggenberger came highly recommended, I am very disappointed in the associate and the resident care I received while an inpatient at St Joes. They did not agree on my care openly in front of me and I feel this was why recovery from this surgery was long and difficult. Dr Eggenberger needs to go back to Henry Ford Health System where he would have better support.

Beware of this doctor and the office, the doctor does not listen to his patiences, he is after money. He

Dr. Eggenberger is competent, kind, gentle - wonderful. I recommend him highly. His bevy of residents is - acceptable. Some of the office procedures, however, leave much to be desired. 1) No follow-up call following surgery/hospital discharge; 2) 6 days post-op, a staffer phoned & insisted on completing a new-patient questionnaire, replete with inane questions given my status & containing medication info outdated by >1 year. She would not alter her approach or questions when I advised her on my post-op status & never inquired about my well being. Maddening. That said, Dr. Eggenberger's nurse is excellent, & office personnel managed to get a faxed message to her that I had mis-labeled. On balance, kudos for Dr. Eggenberger, his nurse, & some office personnel; harpoons for office procedures.
