Dr. John Read Ewing, MD

I had been seeing Dr. Ewing for nearly a year and a half when my insurance and ability to pay became grounds for discharge. I had never had any issues at his clinic, never used, never missed appointments, nothing. I accepted his rapid-taper because I was able to find another addiction doctor. BUT, Dr. Ewing had taken on a couple other prescriptions of mine, mentioned nothing about me also having to taper those and when the time came (in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic) for me to need a refill to bridge me to an appointment with a new primary physician, I was told since I had been discharged, he could not help me. EVEN THOUGH, at the time of my discharge phone appointment, when I specifically asked about the refills of my other medications, I was told they would be happy to help me out until I could find all new docs. His refill nurse was rude and refused to even relay my request to Dr. Ewing, as if it was her decision to make. When I called back to speak to him directly (at… the urging of my new addiction doc) he had the receptionist advise me that since I was discharged he could be of no assistance. During my time seeing him I came to understand a bit more about my addiction but not much more than any run of the mill counselor I've had in the past could do for me. He literally had me watch videos, of him, talking to students, while seeing him. Most of the time when I did try to talk to him about my depression and factors that could potentially lead to me relapsing or breaking away from sobriety he would reference things I was experiencing in my home life, tell me to change my situation and put me on anti-depressants. Real deep, doc. I think a lot of these doctors are so used to seeing people fail that they unload them before they can affect their success rates. I can only imagine coming across so many med-seeking and addicts... I'm sure he doesn't really care anymore. I felt like a lot of the stuff he told me was his broken record lines that he repeats daily to his patients. He has given me the same handouts multiple times, even after reminding him that we've already been over this... we all just blend together. I don't think he's using his knowledge and experience to help people battle addiction anymore than he is creating a new dependency on a different drug and then cutting us loose whenever it no longer serves him or the New Start Clinic. If you're looking for suboxone with very little frills and have insurance... this is your place. If you need a lot of support, you may want to look elsewhere. Especially if you don't have a back up plan. Judging by other reviews that I've read, it's not unusual for him to discharge patients at the drop of a dime.

How can you say you SUCCESSFULLY get people out of the program when they are all still looking for meds on the streets and still struggling or have to go to a different doctor to continue care?? Dr. Ewing you need to stop saying your successfully treating people. Just because you get them out/off the program doesn't mean you did it successfully. I know way too many of your patients that you claim were discharged from your program rehabilitated and are still on the streets. people come in, you give them a dose, you rapid taper then dump them off and discharge them, all while putting in your books it was yet another 'success story'. Realistically you have TONS of patients all having to trade and buy meds throughout the program cause you just don't listen or care. Your rapid taper and nonsense babble just to hear yourself talk doesn't help anyone. LISTEN TO YOUR PATIENTS. Maybe then you will actually one day have an ACTUAL success story instead of patients you like to get out of the… program and add to your pretend list of 'successfully discharged/rehabilitated' patients. You better take a good look back through your files of DISCHARGED patients and recount the ones that have all relapsed, reoffended with drug crimes or overdosed (all after their successful program with you)

What's most memorable was having a fever above 101 and having HIM tell me "You have a bad case of the angries." Turns out, I have CHRONIC LYME DISEASE, and he YELLED at me, "THERE IS NO CHRONIC LYME". He's completely rude and thinks he knows everything, and that he knows more about YOU than you do.

No longer hear left all his patients high and dry
