Dr. John Michael Hawkins, MD

As Chief of Psychiatry, Dr. Hawkins is a member of the Executive Team and has administrative responsibilities over the inpatient and outpatient operations of the hospital. In his role as the Director, Outpatient Adult Services, his specific focus is on the day-to-day operations of outpatient services for the adult population. As Deputy Chief Research Officer he assists in the day-to-day management of the Research Institute and directs its functions into overall clinical care at the Center. His responsibilities with the Research Institute include assisting with administrative duties, examining patients for appropriateness for trials as well as ongoing treatment as a part of the trials. He is also responsible for spearheading research initiatives using the fMRI. He is also serving as the Medical Director for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Services, in which he works with a skilled treatment team in the delivery of TMS for patients with depression who are interested and …appropriate for this procedure.

Dr. Hawkins is an expert provider of psychopharmacology with psychotherapy for adults in his private outpatient practice. He is an adjunct associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Hawkins received is doctor of medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin and his Bachelor of Science in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served his residency in the psychiatry department of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his fellowship in biological psychiatry.

Prior to joining Lindner Center of HOPE, Dr. Hawkins worked as a staff psychiatrist in a community mental health center providing direct clinical care and supervised psychiatric residents. He also provided expert testimony in the Hamilton County Probate Court. His works have appeared in various professional journals, such as the Annals of Clinical Psychology, Clinical Advancements in the Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders, International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry. He has also administered clinical trials for Pfizer Inc., Wyeth-Ayerst Research, Zeneca Pharmaceuticals Group and Jannsen Pharmaceuticals. His lectures and talks have covered doctor-patient relationships, pharmacology, antipsychotics, common psychiatric diagnoses, the catatonic syndrome and the neurobiology of addiction.

Through his vast teaching experience, including supervising psychiatry residents, Dr. Hawkins has received several awards, specifically The Golden Apple Teaching Award for Excellence in Medical Student Teaching and two Golden Apple Teaching Awards for Excellence in Resident Teaching. Dr. Hawkins also received the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill (NAMI) Exemplary Psychiatrist Award. Most recently, he was recognized as one of Cincinnati’s Top Doctors for 2007 and 2009 by Cincinnati Magazine.
