Dr. John Leo Hoffman, MD

I could not belive what this man said to me in my appointment. He came in the room and was clearly not done with work on the laptop from the patient before me. He was talking negatively about other staff and how they entered information on files. Then he could not read my name right on the file (Ashlee... not that hard), and I think tried to make a joke about my name but I honestly couldn't tell. Then it got worse. He looked at my weight and said "Woah, your weight is really high, did you know you're almost morbidly obese?" I weigh about 217. He kept going on about my bmi number, and kept repeating that I'm obese, and asked if I recently had any children. I have a history with mental health and an eating disorder, which he did not know before spouting that off because he did not look at my history (like I said before, he was still doing other stuff when he came in!). I told him my weight has fluctuated over the years due to the eating disorder, and he said "Well it looks like it's… back, huh?". Then he asked "is it fact or an error that you've gained over 40 lbs since you were here a year ago?" I told him it was true and he was appalled. He neglected to ask if I'm active (I am... I walk/hike often), or my actual eating habits (I'm vegan and have been for years). He was visibly shocked that my blood pressure and other vitals were good, given that my "weight is so high". He then proceeded to tell me about another patient who was obese that is on a medication for depression and eating disorders that has lost 40lbs and is much better. As I was leaving he said to me: "Well good luck with your weight problem". I broke down in tears the second I left the office because of how ashamed and embarrassed he made me feel. Nobody should be spoken to in that way, especially someone with a history of mental illness and eating disorders.

At my physical appointment, Dr Hoffman entered the building through the main door right at the time of my appointment, coming back from his lunch break. He mentioned to someone else whose office was right off of the waiting room that the place he had gone to was closed. I waited 15 minutes before being taken back and another several minutes after the nurse saw me. When he finally entered the room, although I hadn't complained he apologized for holding me up; then he said, "Speaking of holding you up I'll be right back." He proceeded to the nurse's station to discuss ordering a pizza, what toppings to go on it, who would share in eating it, etc. and ultimately had the nurse order a medium supreme... Yes, he left the door open so I heard everything. When he returned several minutes later, explaining that he has "missed lunch", he was concerned about the 10 lbs I had gained since my last visit, which is a completely reasonable concern. What was unreasonable was the fact that… everything we discussed from that point forward was excused by him as me being "obese", a word he grossly overused during the visit. I weigh 218, and yes that falls into the obese category for my height according to BMI, but the issue was that he focused on obesity and stopped listening to what I was saying. When he asked me what I was doing differently and I said really nothing he said, "Well clearly you are eating more." I explained that I didn't think I was, but he didn't listen. I told him about a problem I have had for years, and yet he said it was because of obesity. Another issue… Obesity! It didn't matter that I haven't always been obese or even overweight and that the problems weren't new. He just brushed me off. Then, he suddenly left the room in the middle of the exam, without saying why. Just that he would be right back. When he returned, probably 15 minutes later, he said with his mouth full that he had called in my prescriptions, which is usually done at the end. I know he was chewing a piece of pizza because he had it stuck in the corner of his mouth. He proceeded with the exam, listened to my heart and wanted to check my legs for swelling. He asked me to unzip my boots, which I did and offered to take off. He declined but added that "I looked like I was going to ride a horse or something." I certainly didn't need his fashion review. The final straw was when he was pressing on my stomach he said, "Where did you get that belly?" I wish I had answered with, "Where did you get that bedside manner?" but I was too busy being ashamed and humiliated. How unprofessional and degrading. He offered no solution for my weight problem yet he robbed me of my dignity. All this took place without a nurse present, but as a bonus, he had left the examination room door open the entire time for all to hear. It took everything I had left to hold back the tears. I will not return.

I've only seen Dr. Hoffmann twice so far and he's a keeper. He listens, takes time for Me to explain my concerns over what I think are my issue's. I did blood work and a chest x-ray and he took all the time I needed with my questions over a few concerns. I highly recommend him for anyone looking for a new Dr.

He is a bad Dr should be removed is my view.He did Not go over blood work nor ultra sound .Poor listener this Dr.Is .His humor is bad he is not funny at all.Would not advise this Dr at all.

a born diagnosticion..they don't come any better

The rest of the staff at Oak Orchard seem to be courteous, thoughtful, compassionate people, however Dr. Hoffmann is none of those things. My experience as his patient was a horrible one. His bedside manner is the stuff of nightmares.
