Dr. John Robert Mathias, MD

As someone who has seen multiple GI specialists, Dr. Mathias is by far my worst experience. He has 1 area of interest (IBS + insulin intolerance in endometriosis patients), and will diagnose you to fit that if at all possible, despite his lack of OB/GYN experience. If you do know you fit that profile, he may be of help--but if you don't have those outside diagnoses, I would stay away. I was told I was wrong and made to feel that my own experience and knowledge of my body didn't matter when I contradicted or questioned him, and was given poor or unclear explanations to most direct treatment questions. Tests did not seem to confirm his hypothesis and I reacted poorly to meds, but he insisted we continue anyway--instead, after giving it a 6 month trial, I sought a second opinion. When I pointed out flaws in his (25 year old) medical study, backed up my reasoning for wanting to look into other explanations with research reports, or simply expressed doubts + concerns, I was routinely… brushed off. There is no value placed on you as a patient or your experience as the person living your symptoms. His nurse was kind enough, but the receptionist expressed bafflement at why I would have basic requests such as a copy of test results.

Watch out for this doctor's office, they will nickel and dime you for everything. They even charge for speaking with them on the phone. Front desk lady is less than pleasant and they seem to run "tests" that just run up your bill.

I went to see Dr. Mathias on a hunch that something was wrong with my stomach. It turns out that I have been living with a condition all of my life, a GI tract seizure disorder, that caused me to eat constantly and excessively to keep my stomach from hurting and never gain weight. I am positive that only a GI doctor (Dr. Mathias) that could perform the electrogastrogram (EGG) that reads electrical impulses in the gut could have diagnosed me. Any other doctor would have told me I was fine. I feel so different now. I am calm and relaxed without stomach pain or the excessive need to eat. Dr. Mathias was fantastic. He took the time to get my family history, let me listen to the strange noises in my gut and explain the results of the EGG. We discussed the treatment plan and adjusted the supplements according to my dietary issues and the supplements I already take. The staff was not warm and fuzzy, but then, I was there to have a problem solved, so that was fine with me. Dr.… Mathias really exceeded my expectations: A fantastic diagnostician, critical thinker and problem solver!

Finally a doctor to undercover the reasons for my digestive problems and difficulty stabilizing my weight in spite of eating a healthy diet and consistent exercise program. Thank you Dr. for utilizing your comprehensive approach for healing. I highly recommend Dr Mathias to those who finally want permanent solutions.

The nurse forgot to tell me I had to fast before the colon spasm test. I told her I just went through a major surgery, but she ignored my pain and treated my body without any attention right before and after the lab work on a recliner. She yelled at me one time for refill. She is always arrogant and rude to patients. My coworker hates this clinic just because of this nurse. Always poker face. Know Nothing but always give us incorrect information. I really hope they can replace her. Incomplete and rude. Worse nurse I've ever met.

Dr. J. Mathias helped me for over 5 years, BUT, he put me on so much medication and at high levels, Zoloft and Xanax to name a few. These are outside his medical specialty. I trusted him. I was set to have ankle surgery and that Dr wouldn't operate until I have been removed from the " level highs of Meds. I had to go to a rehab facility for 6 weeks to detox from the meds. I'm still in the process of detoxing. I trusted Dr Mathias and he had me on 3x the normal amount for Zoloft. Not normal medical prodicall. I reported him to medical association as did my pharmacy. BEWARE of doctors who sell products and diagnose so fast and writes prescriptions outside their MD background I dont want anyone else to go through this detox

I learned to live with my endo-related GI problems after being evaluated by Dr. Mathias. The dietary changes he recommended took care of the majority of pain and chronic diarrhea I was suffering from. I still have a sensitive tummy, but if I stick with the regimen he recommended I do much better.

Dr. Mathias is an excellent doctor. A Very caring doctor.

After many, many unnecessary tests, gallbladder surgery and thousands of dollars spent on doctor co-pays, prescriptions and over the counter remedies for IBS, I was referred to Dr. Mathias. He was the first doctor that actually LISTENED to me and explained (albeit, sometimes in too much detail for this ADHD brain) what was going on with my digestive tract. He prescribes pharmaceutical grade supplements and yes he sells them onsite - which I personally find convenient. He also prescribes a "cocktail" of medications that he has developed through the many years of research he has dedicated his career too. Face it, there are not many male doctors who have deicated their entire career to researching women's health issues - he is truly a rare breed. Any time I complain about how much medication I have to take, he reminds me that we are working with very LOW doses. He hates insurance companies and advocates for the patient rather than adhering to the insurance company's stupid… guidelines when it comes to the best course of treatment (which by the way , I learned prior to my hysterectomy, that a doctor that NEVER practiced medicine was making the decisions for Blue Cross, which probably means they graduated last in their class...ugh). Yes, his office has strict rules, but they are very forthcoming and provide you with their list of policies. He is a very conservative, humble man, but also keeps an open mind when it comes to treatment. He treats the entire patient, which is a rare thing these days. His staff are some of the most caring, patient people that I have ever encountered. Can't say enough good things about Dr. Mathias..
