Dental Fillings: Resources for Further Reading Last updated 10 days ago 0 Comment If you need dental fillings to repair and prevent further tooth decay, your dentist may present you with different filling options. While amalgam fillings were once seemingly ubiquitous, composite fillings have gained popularity for their natural appearance. Ask your dentist about the advantages and characteristics of each filling material to see which of them is the right choice for you and your dental needs. This dental guide from Medicine Net provides an overview of dental fillings, why they are needed and how they are used. Patients and dentists should work together to decide on which filling material to use. Each will have its own advantages and disadvantages, and your dentist may recommend one over the other depending on the location and severity of the decay. Is there cause to be concerned about the safety of amalgam fillings? While some may worry about the presence of mercury in amalgam fillings, governmental and other large health bodies have found no scientific evidence to disprove the safety of amalgam fillings. The debate surrounding the safety of amalgam fillings is outlined in this WebMD article. The American Dental Association offers more information about the differences between amalgam fillings and composite fillings in this dental fillings guide. While amalgam fillings are durable and less expensive than composite fillings, composite fillings are made to match the tooth’s color, resulting in a more natural-looking smile. Regular Dental Care for College Students Last updated 13 days ago 0 Comment Going away to college is an exciting time in a student's life. Being away from mom and dad offers new opportunities and new responsibilities.  Often times our college patients snack more (especially high sugar foods) and brush less. They may also skip their regular dental appointments.  This combination can result in increased oral bacteria levels and active tooth decay. We encourage our college patients to continue with their six month dental cleanings/exams and we recommend they adopt our "college schedule".  This schedule focuses on visits in June/July and then again in December/January.  This way, when the student is home, they can include a visit to our office. Regular dental appointments will help ensure that they will not be "earning" cavities while earning that college degree. For more information about dental care, please contact Dr. John B.
