Meet Oral Surgeon Dr. Mennitt
Dr. John Mennitt grew up in Toledo Ohio but has lived most of his life in Maryland. After graduating from the Honors Program of the University of Toledo with a B.S. in chemistry he began graduate school in the Department of Biochemistry at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He continued towards his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Georgetown University School of Dentistry. There he consistently ranked in the top 5% of his class and discovered his interest in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. He was awarded membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society.
Dr. Mennitt continued his post-graduate training with his internship and residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. There he gained training in anesthesia and medicine as well as performing an extensive amount of trauma, orthognathic, and dentoalveolar surgery. He served as chief administrative resident for the …department in 1980 prior to entering private practice in suburban Maryland. He remained on staff as a senior attending at the Washington Hospital Center and participated as a part-time clinical instructor in the residency program until 1995.
Currently, Dr. Mennitt is a member of the medical staff at Montgomery General Hospital where he has served as section chief. He is a member and past president (1995-96) of the Maryland Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillary Surgery(board certified). He is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. He holds membership status in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association, the Middle Atlantic Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the International Academy for Sports Dentistry.
Dr. Mennitt has a passionate interest in dental implants. He founded and continues to direct the Maryland Implant Society a local affiliate of the Seattle Study Club, a “University without walls” to provide high quality continuing education for area dentists. He regularly attends and speaks at surgical seminars, workshops, and conferences. His other clinical interests include dentoalveolar surgery (wisdom teeth), oral pathology, orthognathic surgery and bone grafting. Dr. Mennitt’s interest in sports dentistry gained him a position as consulting oral surgeon for the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards professional hockey and basketball teams.
Personally, Dr. Mennitt shares an active family life with his wonderful wife Alice, and their college-age daughters, Meredith and Adrienne. He also enjoys family travel, golf, alpine skiing, photography, music, and computers.
