Dr. John David Pauls, MD

This guy is a real expert in his field. No half-baked theories here! He has the facts and the research to back them up--much of which he actually conducted himself! Maybe I'm just a sucker for smart guys--I was in John's office doing intake and he got a phone call. He had been pretty deep in a conversation with me and he was instantly in the caller's case. The guy (on the phone) had a change of some sort and John adjusted his medication dosage over the phone! I mean, there are lots of variables involved in a drug-strength decision. I'd be getting out a calculator or looking something up on RxList--not John! He just adjusted the dosage over the phone, said his pleasantries and hung up. An instant later, he was right back on my case without skipping so much as a beat. I asked him whether he ever took a step back and considered how incredible a thing that is--that he probably does several times each day. He replied that sometimes, when he's got a moment to breathe, he does. … He said that it is pretty amazing but he can't afford to pay it any mind. "I've got too much critical stuff on my mind at any given time," he said. I used to want to be a doctor. Now I'm not so sure. Sounds like a very stressful way to earn a living. He straightened me out about a lot of misinformation that's floating around the world concerning allergies. Since he treated me, I've got a lot fewer problems with allergens. Life just keeps getting better and better. I'd recommend this guy to anyone who has problems with allergies and/or asthma. No stars for "Bedside manner" because I wasn't in bed. He's really personable though.

After moving here from out of state I was in dire need of a new allergist and was referred to Dr. Pauls by my PCP. While I feel that Dr. Pauls may be very well educated in the area of Allergy and Immunology. My appointment was very cold and unhelpful. I was diagnosed with severe environmental and food allergies after my first anaphylactic reaction at the age of 20. During my appt with Dr. Pauls however, I was basically told to forget everything any other allergist had ever told me and that all the information I had was incorrect. I was also interrupted so many times that I was unable to give him a full picture of my allergies. I had to throw some information (reaction history, etc..) in randomly at which point I was given a harsh response along the lines of "why didn't you bring this up earlier". Im not sure whether to think he is just old fashioned and set in his ways or that he just didn't want to take the time. I may give him another opportunity however I am unsure if I want to… continue long term care with him at this point.

Dr. Pauls called me into his office ten minutes before my scheduled appointment time and told me he had spent the weekend going over my (extensive) chart. He knew my medical (immune system) issues better than I did and allowed me plenty of time to ask any questions or make any comments I wanted. He is the most thorough and knowledgeable doctor I have ever met in my life, pleasant and easy to talk to, and very efficient as well. His physical exam was a classic hands-on listen and look and palpate, such as many doctors don't do very often these days. I expect I will put my immune deficiency to rest, following his recommendations.
