Dr. John Alan Schaffner

I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping my brother-in-law while he was at Mayo to check over a gall bladder surgery he had in South Dakota. He is 83 years old but was strong, walked four miles a day and golfed daily before this surgery. We could all see him going down hill physically as well as emotionally losing fifteen pounds and thinking this was the end for him. After he saw you and you reviewed his test results he was invigorated and even his complexion had better color. He will be back to his old self again thanks to you and your help. Your compassionate heart and listening to and answering his questions was truly wonderful. They did not experience that with their other physician in South Dakota. You gave him hope which is a gift we will always be thankful to you for. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

I have a very difficult to diagnose disease of chronic nausea and daily vomiting. I've been to Cleveland Clinic and Temple University and was unimpressed with both. I came to Mayo Clinic after 4 years of symptoms and this was by far the best place and doctor I've been to. The wait for my appointments are always are less than 10 minutes. He is very good at explaining things and after all gastrointestinal tests came up negative, but he thought outside the box and suggested meeting with both a genetic specialist and a geneticist (both I saw in the same week). Although I still am suffering, he has at least given me hope. I highly recommend this doctor.

I have now seen Dr. Schaffner three times. I can't say enough good about him. He is eveything a good doctor should be. He cares so much about his patients and when you are with him you get the feeling that right here and now, you are the most important thing in the world. He explains things so well. He really helped me with a diagnosis of IBS-C. At my last appointment I had to wait an hour to see him, but this was because of a terrible snow storm in Rochester. When he did see me, he apologized three times for making me wait. And because this is the Mayo Clinic, everyone you meet there, from the desk staff to the guy who takes your money in the parking garage are so kind and helpful. Again, I cannot say enough about this medical center.

I am currently a patient of Dr. Schaffner. He is one of the most caring, down to earth doctors I have ever dealt with (and let me tell you, I have dealt with ALOT). He takes his time and makes sure that you understand what is going on with your tests, exams, diagnosis, procedures and treatments. He always talks to me like he's one of my friends and never makes me feel bad for asking questions. He uses terms that I can understand easily. He works with my physician here at home which makes my life much less complicated. My case has been a rather difficult one to diagnose and he has worked tiressly to help me. I recommend Dr. Schaffner to anyone and everyone. He is a blessing.
