John P. Shaw, DMD
My decision to pursue a career in dentistry was influenced by my father, Dr. William W. Howard, a prominent member of the dental community. He exposed me to the joys of dentistry and infused me with both enthusiasm and ethical guidelines for the practice of outstanding dentistry. After more than 27 years, I still have a passion for dentistry.
My life has been enriched by the acquaintance of the many and varied patients I have met over the years. As they share their life stories and family events with me, I try to learn and grow from their experiences. Watching the children grow, marry and then bring their children to me is priceless. I strive to treat each and every one of them the way I would want myself, my family, or my friends to be treated.
Education and Continuing Education
My patients deserve no less than for me to be an avid student of dentistry. After serving as a Dental Technician in the U.S. …Navy, I returned to finish my degree in Biology at Portland State University. I obtained my dental degree from Oregon Health Sciences University School of Dentistry in 1982.
By my continuously learning about new and updated techniques and materials, my patients benefit by being offered the most ideal dentistry available. Due to my ongoing coursework, I received my Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry and continue to be an active member in that organization. As my knowledge and experience have matured, and after incorporating correction of occlusion into my daily practice, the joy of seeing the improvement in the quality of life of many patients who have come to me suffering from years of headaches, neck aches, and jaw problems has kept me engaged and enthusiastic.
In the Office
I have practiced in this location since 1982 and have found the neighborhood and the community to be a comfortable fit. My patients are important and dear to me; as I visit with them over the years, they become more than just patients- they are acquaintances with special interests, attributes and gifts that I enjoy learning about.
We like to have fun at this office. It isn't often you hear peals of laughter coming down the hall in a dental office, but you do here! We take our work seriously, but enjoy the banter and joking around that keeps it from becoming a stuffy environment. My feeling is that laughter is the best medicine when it comes to reducing anxiety.
My team is a group of wonderful individuals who were chosen not only for their professional competency, but also for their ability and desire to provide the quality of care I insist on in my practice. We are here to provide great care in a friendly, relaxed environment, with customer service as the top priority.
Family Life
I met my best friend, Judy, in 1969 when she was in nursing school. We married in 1975. Our son, Jonathan, is an awesome upright and electric bass musician, who is currently finishing his degree in Music at Western Oregon University. Judy is currently the business manager in my office. I enjoy listening to music including classic rock, and jazz. My hobbies outside of dentistry include camping, sailing, skiing, SCUBA, playing piano, playing with computers, and working around the house and yard.
