Highly approachable and excellent communicator. Office staff are professional.

Dr. Sherwood is not only a great surgeon, he takes care of the whole patient. When I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, Dr. Sherwood generously spent more than an hour explaining to me and my wife what was wrong and how surgery would fix the problem. He explained in great detail every aspect of what this entailed. Fixing the problem is an understatement. The surgery changed my life! When the surgery took more time than was expected, he made sure that my wife was fully informed by the surgical team and knew that everything was okay. My recovery was great and I couldn't be happier with the results. Dr. Sherwood cares about more than "body parts" -- he cares about his patients AND their families.

In 2015, Doctor Sherwood performed a rib resection on me at Mary Washington Hospital. He cut an inch out of two of my ribs and left sharp jagged edges on my rib bones. He left the cut through ribs unattached and floating freely in my body which leaves me in great pain all the time. He also punctured my lung during the procedure. I do not recommend this doctor.

I work with Dr. Sherwood. I have worked with many physicians over the years and few care as much about their patients as Dr. Sherwood does. He wants his patients to be educated, healthy and treated in a timely and cost-effective manner. While there are many things beyond his control with insurance and scheduling, he does his part to help his patients. I would highly recommend him to anyone needing thoracic services and i would DEFINITELY select him as my provider if I were in need of his specialty.

Feb. 23, 2006 he performed an esophagectomy on me at Hopkins, after seeing me cold in Nov 2005 due to insurance issues at Mayo. The fact that I am writing this 13 years later is a testament to his skills. His skills as a human being may even exceed his professional skills. Highly recommended.
