Dr. John Irwin Starr, MD

I was impressed with this doctor from the first time I met with him, a number of years ago. He had an extremely dry sense of humor. But his time spent with me resulted in an accurate diagnosis and the first time I had received appropriate medications. The last time I saw him, after a lengthy period of being his patient, there was a notable change in him. While the visit continued to be productive, he seemed to be, for the first time, distracted. Because I was able find a specialist (90 miles) closer to home, I did have my records transferred. But I still felt a sense of loss when I was notified he was no longer available.

From the minute I met him I found him caring and compassionate.

When I 1st met Dr Starr I didn't care for him & I even went so far as to try to switch drs,but none of the others were accepting new patients.So I decided to stay with him & after a couple more visits I got used to him.He was a unique man,warm in his own way & when he finally won me over was when I had to take my granddaughter with me to my appt & he didn't complain or make her wait in the waiting room by herself, instead he did magic tricks for her.They were to me, a little cheesy, the old hankerchief trick with a little music, Ta,ta,ta, ta, ta,ta,he sang as he raised his hankerchief up & down over his face & each time it was a different expression.He had both of us laughing so hard, that I didn't mind the wait.NO matter what,I wouldn't trade my visits with Dr John I.Starr for anythihg.I miss him, I will always miss him. He is a remarkable man, who really cared for his patients,even when he himself was hurting.There was a time when his daughter was in the hospital, problems with the… birth of his grandchild & you could tell he was upset,so I asked him about it.He was reluctant to say, but I pushed because he listened to me when I lost my son 4 years ago & he stayed with me when I cried & waited patiently until I settled down.Never once did he hurry me out of his office & he listened to me. You don't get this kind of human touch from a doctor anymore.I don't know what has happened to Dr Starr, but I pray for him & his family that he is alright & I hope that the picture I have of him sitting on a beach with a drink with a little umbrella in it,with his family around him is where he is.May God Bless You Dr Starr, you & your family & keep you safe. You are truly missed!

I was referred to Dr. Starr by my primary phyician. Believe it not he is highly regarded within the medical community - all four specialists I see like him. Dr. Starr is very knowledgable and thorough. At my first visit he thoughly went over my medical history, performed basic in office testing, ordered numerous x-rays and blood work. He even found a cyst on my thyroid which should have been detected by my endrocrinologist. I do agree that he has no bedside manner and has an odd sense of humor The worst issue I find is with his incompetent office staff who lack in follow-up skills. It took them 4 months to get my Enbrel prescription correct with Caremark, so I was without my medication. They also charge at least $15 for just a 2-page copy of medical notes. They tend to schedule appointments more with Physicians Assistants instead of with Dr. Starr and claim that is how they run their office. I just saw Dr. Starr a few weeks ago and he seemed out of it and was mumbling. He… thought he was treating me for seizures instead of fibromyalgia. I've never had a seizure. I mainly wrote this comment because I believe Dr. Starr has been having medical issues which could be contributing to some of the problems his patients have been experiencing with him. Today I received a letter stating due to medical reasons he was forced to suddenly retire.

I felt like I had to convince him how much pain I was in; talked down to me; I left in tears.

the thing i want to say about this doctor is i dont know who gave him a license, has no people skills and i agree with all the above reviews.

Has said inappropriate insulting things to me or to an intern about me on more than one occasion. Be warned, once you are deemed a patient of any doctor in this practice, they will NOT let you switch to another doctor within the practice regardless of any problems you may have with that doctor.This doctor spends too much time telling stupid jokes. Although he's very knowledgeable, he often doesn't convey what he is thinking. He is very much the absent minded professor, forgetting to give you prescriptions, or instructions to the front office staff regarding setting up diagnostic tests or when he wants to see you again.

Dr. Starr is distant, appears uncaring, sarcastic, rude, makes mistakes, seems preoccupied, not organized, no bedside mmanner, poor diagnostician, abrupt.

Every thing mentioned on this site is identical to what I have been dealing with. What a waste of time and money I wish there was a rating lower than 1. Just be sure to smile while you are being treated like a door mat or you are likely to get dropped.

This man has perhaps the rudest bedside manner I have ever experienced! He rarely spoke dorectly to me, and addressed his assistant (or whoever the moman typing in the laptop was)rather than lookign at me. He insulted me on several occasions thinking it humorous, and dismissed my questions regarding introducing exercise into my routine after finding out that I was not willing to drive 40 min each way 3's a week to take tai chi from theonly person in Phoenix he felt capable fo teaching it. I left the office in tears and feeling as though my issues had been completely dismissed. Thus is a doctor I would not refer to anyone! I do not find it suprirising that they hava an office policy whereby you can NOT change doctors once you have seen Dr. Starr. It's obvious he would have no patients. The term "hate" perhaps is too severe, but I would say that I absoluteley loathe this man.
