Meet Dr. John Sweeney, DDS
Dr. John Sweeney, North Brunswick class of 1995 graduate, returned to his hometown of Leland to live and practice dentistry, after graduating from the UNC School of Dentistry in 2004. John and his wife Kim, who is also from Leland and a North Brunswick graduate, attended and graduated from East Carolina University together, before marrying and moving to Chapel Hill. They moved home in May of 2004 to be close to their families and for the raising of their two children, Mia and Nathan.
Dentistry is John’s passion. He has made a commitment to stay at the cutting edge of the dental profession through continuing education. John spends countless hours in courses every year learning the latest techniques in cosmetic dentistry, prosthodontics, and diagnostics. He recently began an education continuum at the world renowned Pankey Institute for advanced dental education.
In October of 2008 and after 3 years of solo practice, Dr. Sweeney asked Dr. Chad Biggerstaff to …join his practice. Although they grew up within 15 miles of each other, they first met in dental school during their freshman orientation. Due to a life threatening bicycle accident 3 days into orientation, Chad had to withdraw from dental school to concentrate on his recovery. Three years later, Chad returned to dental school and completed his degree in 2007. Ironically, the friendship they formed in just a few short days at that freshman orientation became the foundation for the future. The future would become BlueWave Dentistry .
John is also an avid musician and songwriter. In Decemeber of 2008, John released his debut full length CD, “Spread the Loveâ€. With a mix of reggae, blues, folk, and help from his good friend Paul Spurrier, John bears his soul and struggle in this record. His first love however, is and always will be surfing claims his wife. Growing up near the coast, John has been surfing since he was 8. He still finds time to get in the water everyday there is something to ride whether it is a dawn patrol session or late in the afternoon.
Lastly, he is a committed husband and dedicated father of two. There’s nothing more he would rather do than spend time with his family. He and his family attend and are active at Port City Community Church. John is also an active member in the North Carolina Dental Society, a member of the American Dental Association, and the American Academy of General Dentistry. Most importantly, he enjoys giving back to the community that has supported him for so long by volunteering at local outreach clinics throughout the year, as well as contributing to local charitable organizations and schools.
