Dr. John Wheeler:
During Dr. Wheelers first year of practice back in his home town of  Rocky Ford, Colorado, Dr. Wheeler was confronted with a very involved dental reconstruction case, the complexity of which isnt treated in dental school. Two years earlier the patient was involved in a traumatic accident that resulted in the loss of four front teeth and damage to several others. She was treated by her family dentist and thought her dental work was complete but she …started having pain in one of the anchor teeth of her new bridge. When Dr. Wheeler saw what was happening with her recently finished dental work he felt sick. She had been treated without adequate planning and with sloppy workmanship. Everything was failing. Now after 25 years of practice, he still recalls this as his most emotionally difficult consultation. Dr. Wheeler had to be the one to tell her the dental work needed to be redone. Over the next three years her mouth was successfully restored under the direction of a very competent dentist that Dr. Wheeler referred her to.  When he graduated from the University of Colorado School of Dentistry in 1983, Dr. Wheeler was well prepared to treat common dental problems. He was not as well prepared to handle more complicated dental problems and the emotional aspects that accompany them. As a result of this patients poor treatment, she needed to see specialists for root canals, gum surgery, and more extensive prosthetics. This could have been avoided if she had been treated properly at the time of her accident. This incident inspired Dr. Wheeler to seek out more advanced education. Dr. Wheeler began attending every advanced dental course that he could manage. He became a CE (continuing education) junkie. Most were one day events on a specific topic. It was not until 1989 that he heard someone speak about a dental practice philosophy that seemed to put everything together. Dr. L.D. Pankey had spent his entire career developing and applying what would become known as the Pankey Philosophy. An institute named in his honor was charged with teaching what Dr. Pankey had assimilated. In 1990 Dr. Wheeler attended his first weeklong continuum at The L.D. Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education. Dr. Wheeler was amazed at what they showed him. In addition to the clinical techniques they taught, he was given permission to schedule one patient at a time and spend more time with each patient. Over the next five years Dr. Wheeler completed the six continuums. It was a life changing experience for him.
