Dr. John Maxwell White JR., MD

I am 78 years old. I have been treated by a number of Urologists in my lifetime. All were, in my opinion--excellent physicians! My former Urologist is an exception: his medical conclusions were inconsistent with test results. Consequently--I was prescribed medication detrimental to my health. Dr Maxwell--has taken a different approach to the diagnosis of my Prostate Cancer and Radiation treatment with the objective of--"finding answers" to the continual bleeding believed to result from Radiation treatment. I have also been referred to a Gastroenterologist--as a result of the thoroughness of Dr, Maxwell's practice of Urologist and related/indicated findings. My initial impression of Dr. Maxwell --is very high!! In a word--Dr, Maxwell--is not an ALOOF--physician!!

I have dealt with Dr White about 8 years and would give him more than 4 stars if possible. He is a pleasant, knowledgeable MD and he bailed me out of a potentially horrible mess. I guess people see things differently but I can't imagine how he isn't a 4 star guy all the way.

I have been seeing Dr. White for over 20 years. Love him. First of all, his credentials speak for him. I find him to be very caring, and seeks and works with you to resolve issues. He has always resolved my problems and explains the pros and cons in a respectful manner. Was at a dinner party one evening and a discussion about recommended doctors came up. A friend did some heavy research on his problem and seeking to find the best doctor even out of state if necessary. Ironically, a physician from another state recommended Dr. White, his reputation is that good. I personally recommended Dr. White as well. Not sure why anyone would give bad reviews, maybe has personal issues? as I have never ever heard any negative feedback about him in all my years of seeing him. Other physicians think the world of him. His focus now appears to be male urology but I continue to see him anyway. Highly recommend him! I drive over an hour to see him, I am that confident he is the best.

Dr. White was referred to me by my primary care physician for a second opinion for prostate cancer treatment. He was thoroughly prepared for my case when meeting for the first time, having read all my previous reports and able to speak in detail about my options, rather than the previous urologist who felt like he picked up my file just outside the door on his way to the meeting with me and my wife, trying to respond to our questions on the fly while he was reading the file. Dr. White is extremely thorough, measured, paced, deliberate and efficient in his approach to treatment, a self-described â??puristâ?? in both treatment and care. He is direct, even curt, but not abrupt; busy, but not necessarily offensively so. Heâ??s also an efficient listener, but not an active listener. This particular trait (â??efficiencyâ?? deficiency if you will) actually has the opposite intended effect and compromises his capacity to understand as fully and communicate as clearly and satisfactorily… as needed, and may be a showstopper for some, but if you can adjust to this style, you should be highly satisfied with this doctor. A positive adjustment in this one area would move him from excellent to outstanding! Have your questions prepared ahead of time, ask a question only once and be prepared to take notes of what he says (with pen and paper if you can, but at lest mental notes for later recall) because he doesnâ??t like to say things twice. When heâ??s said and heard enough, heâ??s ready to leave and will depart politely, but quickly. If you like your doctors warm, comfy, cozy and emotionally involved with your care, you wonâ??t walk away feeling that way with him, but for professional physical care you wonâ??t be disappointed. His office staff are above average, friendly and efficient (following the doctor's lead), compared to my previous experience where the office staff tripped over themselves to see who could be the least helpful in communicating the least amount of my important health information to me.

I am in my late 50's and was referred to Dr. White by my internist because of a rise in my PSA levels. He performed an outpatient prostate biopsy at Piedmont (30 samples, trans-perineal) and found a moderately aggressive cancer, which had not spread out of the prostate; subsequently, he did an open (nerve-sparing) prostatectomy without any short-term complications, and I returned to full continence after 6-8 weeks. Like many older urologists, Dr. White does not do robotic/laparoscopic prostatectomies, which have become popular with patients and many urologists (still a lot of controversy about the relative advantages and disadvantages of robotic vs open procedure), but he explained the issues accurately and gave me the names of other surgeons in ATL and at Hopkins who do robotic procedures, encouraging me to get a second opinion. I am a health professional, and did my own reading as well. My case was fairly straight-foward, and if it had been more complex I would have gone to Johns… Hopkins. However, I felt very comfortable with both Dr. White and Piedmont and am happy with my decision after one year. Dr. White has always been very professional, respectful and responsive to hearing my concerns, but he is not a small-talker or especially emotive kind of guy, having a the efficiently military demeanor of an older surgeon (just fine with me- I don't need a buddy). Waiting time is minimal and the staff is friendly and efficient. My post-surgery PSA results (all negative so far) are reported to me within a few days. Every case is different, but my experience has been overwhelmingly positive.

Dr. White is the very best for those patients seeking professionalism and competence. For patients who want their Doctor to immediately be a friend, he is not the guy.Personally, I would rather have a straight shooter who really knows what he is talking about.

I guess everyone has their own point of view. Dr White was recommended to me by a doctor whom I trust and I have dealt with him several years. I rate Dr White and his staff as top of the line. More importantly, I got favorable results. I have nothing but accolades for Dr White and staff.
