Dr. John Ivan Chung-Wah Yam, MD

Dismissive and unprofessional care after more than 10 years as a patient I have been Dr. Yam’s patient for more than 10 years. I rarely see doctors — usually less than once a year, and sometimes not for several years. Recently, I brought him a detailed physical exam report from China that included several findings, including coronary artery calcification (Agatston score 6), trace mitral and tricuspid valve regurgitation, vascular findings, lung nodules, and elevated ApoB and LDL cholesterol. At my first visit, Dr. Yam told me, “I cannot discuss anything in your report today,” and insisted that I first complete a physical exam with him. He assured me that his exam was comprehensive and that the findings in my outside report would be addressed afterward. I completed the physical. At my follow-up on October 6, he reviewed the findings one by one. He prescribed a statin for my cholesterol, which I do not dispute, and ordered a chest X-ray for the lung findings, which I… appreciated. However, I was concerned that there was no clear follow-up plan for the coronary calcification and other cardiovascular findings. When I asked to see a cardiologist, Dr. Yam repeatedly told me I did not need one and said, “If you don’t listen to me, go somewhere else.” He eventually agreed to a cardiology referral related to the tricuspid regurgitation and told me to call Thursday to schedule it. The next day, October 7, he called me and reversed that decision, saying the issue was very minor and that there was no need to see a specialist. During that conversation, he also told me not to have physical exams done in China in the future because they were “overdone” and “a complete waste of money.” The call ended with him hanging up while I was still speaking. After more than 10 years as his patient, I found the way this was handled extremely disappointing. I am not claiming that a cardiology referral was medically required — I understand that this is a matter of clinical judgment. My concern is the conduct and communication: initially refusing to discuss documented findings, repeatedly telling a long-time patient to “go somewhere else” for asking to see a specialist, reversing a referral decision the next day, dismissing my concerns, and ending the conversation by hanging up. Patients should be able to ask reasonable questions about their health and receive respectful, professional communication, even when a physician disagrees with them.

BE CAREFUL, if you see Dr John Yam. He does all sorts of tests, without even having a decent conversation with you on the 1st visit. I have been to him twice & on both occasions, he has an intent. Is it Profit or Health, you make the call. Just wnated to get the word out. Be Safe & healthy. Go find a good doctor.

Never answers questions. Never explains any thing. Hardly spends any time (may be two or three minutes) and then walks away. Doesn't listen or try to understand. Switched to a different doctor and has been very happy.

Rude/Arrogant attitude from the appointment desk and bill departments. I have insurance and been going to the office for many years. Still, I keep getting talked to by the staff as "The doctor does not want to deal with you"

He doesn't like to answer the questions about his diagnose.

Doesn't like him at all. Always make me wait for almost one hour and just said a few sentences. I feel he is always super busy to care next patitent. Not a reliable doctor because he doesn't care patient's disease and feelings.

I started working at Microsoft after my MBA at Wharton. My friend recommended his doctor, Dr. John Yam, to me when I had a bad cold. He ordered a chest X ray right away and diagnosed pneumonia. I got better in a two days after taking antibiotics and rest. I'm very lucky to have him as my doctor.

My family has been seeing Dr. John Yam for five years. He takes good care of my family. We're very satisfied with his service.

Dr. Yam has a very busy practice, but he always takes time to explain to me my health problems. He is especially good with nutritional issues. I had a stomach problem for many years and I saw many specialists. I was told nothing was wrong. Thanks to Dr. Yam, he found that I had a vitamin deficiency. With appropriate treatment I'm now much better.
