Dr. Jolene Marie Smith, DO

I was referred to Dr. Smith by the VA for knee pain. She recommended burning the nerves around the knees. Right knee was done first, with minimal relief from pain. Left knee, no relief at all. I was not throughly informed about the procedure before being preformed, and there was absolutely no follow up after the second procedure. I called several times to speak with Dr. Smith, always left a message, and never heard back at all. I was left with the impression that all she cared about was the money she made. Not sure if being a veteran had anything to do with it, I believe she doesn’t make as much, caring for a veteran. Really discouraging.

PLEASE READ BEFORE MAKING AN APPOINTMENT WITH HER! PAIN SPECIALISTS OF IOWA. Before you ever get in the door they will try and make you sign a document saying they will charge you for a missed appointment. I refused to sign it saying there is no disclaimer for inclement weather (IOWA ice and snow storms) nor illness. That was a HUGE ordeal, but I did get in. They are not interested in you as a person in pain, only in taking as much money from you as possible without giving you any insight into your condition or what you REALLY need to FEEL or GET better! I was even told at one point that the doctors do not speak to patients directly! You have to go through their assistants. WOW!!! Less than 30 days after being seen for a back problem. They said I'd need to have a nerve ablation test done. Well, really two, because insurance won't pay for the surgery unless you have two. So the first one didn't help me at all so I came in again to tell them that and I said I don't think I want to do the… second one. They talked me into it, saying they were here and ready to do it and you never know it, might work! What a lie. It was less effective than the first test! I wanted to talk to them about my hip pain as well, but I'd have to make another appointment for that! Geez, REALLY? When I got the hip appointment, I called to make sure they got the MRI I'd had taken from Lutheran. Told them to call and get it. A month later, they had no idea I'd even had an MRI! I talked to them about my back pain and not once did they say I’d need to have that done before I could have back surgery, which I found out later by the surgeon's PA. So I tried to get it scheduled and they wanted me to come back in for a re-assessment before deciding to give me the doctor ordered Epidural, so ANOTHER OFFICE CALL and PAYMENT that was completely unnecessary! And then to get rescheduled it was going to be 2 full months! Ridiculous!

I had fractured a vertebrae in my back and had severe, unremitting pain. Dr. Smith, unlike my primary physician, took my symptoms seriously, ordered appropriate testing and recommended kyphoplasty. Post op, I woke up in the recovery room completely pain free. I had resigned myself to living out the rest of my life in excruciating pain and being dismissed by other HCPs as "hysterical". She literally gave me my qualify of life back.

Dr. Smith went above and beyond to provide me with excellent timely care. My treatment involved implanting a Nevro spinal cord stimulator for the treatment of complex regional pain, which I've had since 1995. I admire her no-nonsense felicitous treatment plan. I would recommend her to anyone searching for wonderful care.

I've been suffering (treating) from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome since 1995. I feel honored God lead me to her. I would recommend her to anyone.

I have hip & Leg pain DR.Smith did an injection in my hip it did not help. I asked what she recommended we do next I was told there is nothing else to do. Dr Smith left it at that and never did anything after that and refused to see me. All she wants to do is give injections and nothing else , if that doesn't work and you try to get an appointment they tell you she won't see you....DO NOT GO TO HER

Went to Dr Smith with hip/leg pain & Back pain. Gave me 2 injections one for hip & leg pain didn't do any good . Had injection in my lower back but did NO good about hip & leg pain. Once I asked for something to help with pain in hip & leg I was told there was nothing else she could do for me...DO NOT GOT TO DR. Smith it's a waste of time.

I had been going to Jolene Smith for quite a while, injection after injection and no relief. Finally suggested an expensive compound cream my insurance wouldn't cover. Then wanted to do an implanted nerve stimulator. When I was not on board she dropped mean as a patient. I should add that she never prescribed me pain medicine, and still dropped me saying there is nothing else she can do. I'm still suffering, now with nowhere to turn.

I have suffered with low back pain for the past three years. Unable to sit for any length of time, unable to stand for any length of time. Back always hurting. Two friends told me about their success with Dr. Jolene Smith. I asked for a referral from my doctor and, thankfully, managed to get an appointment within a few days. She diagnosed my condition and suggested a epidural steroid injection. I have heard these shots are not always effective, but she has a special process and found the exact spot that needed injected. I left the surgery center pain free. Excellent doctor, excellent staff. Ready to resume a normal life again.

Dr Smith is one of the most caring,concerned,educated doctors I have met in years. I have never found a physician this well versed in all areas of pain management. If you are having problems or concerned about going to the doctor, see this doctor for sure. I am going to have surgery in the near future with Dr. Smith and have no reservations.
