Dr. Jonathan Young, MD

I was drawn to City of Hope because of its reputation as a worldwide leader in cancer diagnosis and treatment. A fascination with the anatomy of the human brain led Jonathan R. Young, M.D., to a career in radiology. Dr. Young is an associate clinical professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology. He focuses his research on two main areas: 1) Identifying imaging biomarkers that can help predict the molecular expression of brain and kidney tumors, as well as their response to treatment; and 2) Finding the safest possible contrast agents for children undergoing MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging). He has published dozens of peer-reviewed papers on these subjects and has given numerous invited lectures and oral presentations at national radiology conferences. A perennial honors student, Dr. Young graduated summa cum laude from Union College in Schenectady, New York, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in biology and economics. He was the valedictorian of his …graduating class and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Dr. Young received his medical degree from UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He also received the Leo G. Rigler Outstanding Medical Student Award from the UCLA Department of Radiology. He continued his training at UCLA with a residency in radiology and a fellowship in neuroradiology. Dr. Young was the recipient of the 2016 Society of Abdominal Radiology Howard S. Stern Research Award for his project “Identifying Multiphasic MDCT Biomarkers to Predict the Expression of Carbonic Anhydrase-IX, Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1α, and PTEN, Important Prognostic Molecular Targets in Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma.” Dr. Young sees City of Hope as a perfect fit for his research interests and his desire “to help people on a daily basis.”
