Dr. Jose Guillermo Calderon, MD

I’m placing five stars because my goal isn’t to affect the doctor at all but give my genuine experience. He seems very knowledgeable in the field, he’s warm and caring and a great doctor overall. However, my experience wasn’t 100% due to the fact that I had an appointment and waited literally an hour and fifteen minutes to be attended. Mind you, I have a son with ADHD who was bouncing and fidgety inside the small room they place you in - at this point as a mom all you want to do is leave and cancel the appointment. I found it a bit ridiculous to wait so long. Typically other centers don’t take more than an hour. Our time as patients is just as important as that of the doctor you’re waiting to be seen with. Not sure if this is the medical practice at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Please be mindful of the patients that are choosing your center to be seen - competition is out there such as the University of Miami who also has an amazing field of professionals. Second takeaway I… didn’t like from my visit was although I do speak English and Spanish - the language I prefer to speak and be spoken to is English. I understand it better, whereas, thankfully I speak Spanish but it isn’t my native language. The doctor came in and automatically began speaking Spanish, which is fine, but I think it would had been better and rather professional to ask me which language I prefer speaking.

Long before I became a medical doctor myself, Dr. Calderon was my allergist at Yale. I had been suffering for years with seasonal allergies so severe that I was afraid to leave the house 9 months of the year. The congestion, headaches, red eyes…it felt as if I had the flu, let alone embarrassing. So I was referred to Dr. Calderon. He was such a warm and kind doctor. I remember feeling that he was listening to me. We discussed treatment options and he had backup plans in case on first line therapy wasn’t effective. After 2-3 visits, we found a regimen that completely alleviated my symptoms without me becoming a zombie. I enjoyed seeing Dr Calderon, as it felt like visiting a caring friend who was also my doctor. I was so saddened when I saw he was no longer at Yale. Fast forward 16 years later, Dr Calderon remains to be one of my best doctor experiences. And now that I’m a physician myself I understand that his exceptional bedside manner wasn’t bedside manner at all… it was… just his personality. Dr. Calderon if you ever see this, please know that you were my greatest influence not just as patient but also as a medical doctor. I hope you’re doing well.

This doctor change my life, he was the best doctor I could ever had. Dr,. Calderon was there with me when I was in my worst. We didn’t know what I had. It was very hard times for me as a child and for my parents. He made it all much better. He always took really good care. The only thing I regret is that I had to find a different doctor because of my age. My family and me loved him and would love to keep in touch with him.

Had appointment for 2pm and showed up 1:35pm. 2:40 pm and still waiting. It’s like our time is not good enough... Dont go there
