Dr. Jose Ricardo Compean, MD

Very thorough

I have been seeing Dr Compean for about 5 yrs. I have not one complaint! He has went out of his way more than once to help me out. His staff, including his wife are also exceptional. They treat my whole family like their family!

The one thing I will say about Dr. Compean is that he does take time with his patients, however, he does not order studies that needs to be done. I do not know why this is, but he seems to blow off important concerns that a patient may have. I feel that he doesn't respect that you know your body more than he does. If you have no health issues, he would be excellent, but if you do have major health issues or concerns, he seems to not want to order studies or refer you to a specialist. I actually had a great personal rapport with him, but a professional rapport was not that great. He was not honest about side effects with certain medications either. I did not like that. He was irritated when I would not take meds he had prescribed because the side effects were not worth me taking them. Compassionate man, but he just blows off too many things for my comfort.

I want a primary care physician who does not dictate. Who considers me an equal partner in my medical care. Who will patiently answer many questions. Who will send me to another Doctor if he feels my situation calls for it. Doctor Compean fits the bill. My wife and I are both very satisfied with our care.

I have been a patient with Dr. Compean for a few years, as well as my family. I have to say that not only is he professional, he is also very caring. At one time, my son was sick and he took the time out of his day to personally call me after I had left a message with the office staff...how many doctors do that? He is a great doctor.

Dr. Compean is a wonderful doctor. He goes the extra mile for his patients.

I've had 4 bad experiences with this doctor. 1. Was when my husband had a pulmonary embolism 2. When a friend crushed her hand and needed stitches. 3. When my son hurt himself 4. My diabetes and heart testing. My husband had his Pulmonary Embolism and was admitted at a hospital an hour away. When he was released from that hospital after 2 weeks of care he was told to follow up with his primary Which was Compean. He was needing someone to check how coumidin was working or not working as helping him not clot because he had multiple ones in his lungs. It was a serious situation and my husband needed to be monitored. Our calls were not answered, my husband decided to just drive over there and we were told his office machine was broke that can give us a idea where his numbers were, Compean wanted us to drive all the way back up to livingston to see the ER doctor and have him write a blood draw order. The ER doctor explained that once my husband was released he is released to his primary.… The hospital was surprised at how unprofessional our doctor was. A friend was camping with us and she had her hand caught between a ball hitch and RV. We rushed her to a hospital near the campground where she had numerous stitches, her nails sewed back on, and was given pain pills and antibiotics. We drove back to Monroe and didn't start the prescription until the next day because of the hospital already have given her them while there. She started throwing up when she took her prescription. She tried to half her dose, still throwing up, she tried to take ibuprofen and wait it out instead of managing it and she still threw up and by then in extreme pain. It became too much for her to handle and we called Compean. They said we needed to go through the hospital that she had her hand stitched. It was the same situation...the hospital does not care for a patient after the ER release. We let them know she was released and had to follow up with him. Compean's excuse was they were closing in 15 minutes and couldn't do anything. We asked if she could be called in a different pain medicine until she could be seen and they said no. The girl suffered all night. We were told by staff members that at least we were fit in as a first appointment. I do not think we were overjoyed with how accommodating that was. I found it callous that he would let someone go through pain like that. We had called the hospital about her vomitting and the hospital said we should ask for a prescription from Compean for a anti-nausea medicine because the pain meds she was on were what she needed. He wasn't sure about doing that either. I guess doing nothing is better for him. I do not think he is up to date on what medication are out there or what procedure needs to be done so he avoids the situations when they are severe. He pulls out his book where he fingers through looking at medicines etc. He should have understood how to handle these two situations. He shouldn't need a medical book and if he does he has a computer right there on his lap he could use. It seemed absurd he didn't know his anti-nausea meds. So, if you have a cold he's great but, if you have anything life threatening, painful, I wouldn't recommend him. He let us down on getting tests done for my heart too. I think he doesn't want to order tests due to insurance companies and maintaining a good standing. This is when we changed doctors and I have been working with another doctor on my blood pressure because it was not controlled. A doctor to me needs to be someone who can be counted on when things get scary. Who can remember what blood pressure medicine they put you on and if it isn't working is willing to try and figure out what the problem is. If you want to hear the good side of him here they are...you can be seen quickly (if it's a cold). That to me wasn't a reason for staying.

Outstanding professionalism and caring. Great bedside manner, listens to problems, looks for outside the box alternatives when needed. Highly recommended to anyone who is looking to change doctors or get one ini the area. I am an RN, and trust him to take care of me and my whole family.

He is awesome, sincere, caring and very passioante.

I am disappointed that the doctor has decided not to change the medication of my elderly father from an anti-depressant that works against the memory loss medication to one that will activate his mind and help with weight loss.
