Dr. Jose B Melo, MD

In my opinion the most qualified, caring and attentive hematologist in South Florida. Additionally, the entire office staff is wonderful.

Dr. Melo is beyond terrible. He doesn’t help patients understand their treatment and condition. He seems more interested in collecting money from chemotherapy than helping his patients. And don’t ask him any questions because he’s not interested in answering them. Terrible, terrible, terrible doctor.

Dr. Melo has a terrible bedside manner. He lacks the ability to connect with his patients during the most challenging time in their lives. Cancer requires treating both the disease AND the fears of one’s patient. If you don’t ask a specific question, Dr. Melo won’t reveal important information. He does NOT empower the people he treats. I went home bereft of hope, and confused about the nature of the treatment and cancer. Moreover, the student intern is a huge distraction and arrogant. Patients should be asked whether a student doctor can be present in their appointment—especially when seeing a doctor for the first time. Building trust is critical, and that can’t be accomplished when one feels like a mere guinea pig. Teaching a student isn’t more important than making a patient comfortable. I do NOT recommend this doctor.

Visited this practice for the first time with my father Dr Melo. The waiting room chairs not set up for patients especially the elderly with walkers,wheelchairs, walking canes etc.The order of the chairs reminded me of a cramped dust cropper aircraft, patients stepping over each other. The triage room for blood test and vitals is at the end of a corridor which is awkward and pretty far the staff back there were LOUD you could hear them in the ("Cockpit") of a waiting room!.The physician assistant attended to my father whilst she waited for Dr Melo he came in introduced himself told us what meds he wanted my father to take didn't once do any vitals or physical examination himself of my father (The other dr in training did)but I thought Dr melo would at least do his bit not just talk now I know how elderly people and those who don't have surrogates get treated my father didnt understand a lot of what he was talking about .Hadn't I asked my own questions Dr melo would've been out the… door in 2 lickety split minutes. Not feeling this office at all too hodge podge, loud staff no empathy or feelings for patients especially the elderly people who are compromised. Go at your own risk. He maybe a great dr but first impression is meh ??????.ps check out person was nice ,medical assistant was very helpful and polite felt at ease with her. The front desk check in was admonishing a patient speaking back to him as if he were an ANNOYING KITTEN she gets a negative response.

I’m still in shock today was my 6 months appointment after having several blood clouts on my right lung to check if they have been disolve, after being in blood thiners for 6 months. When I arrived to the office the 1st thing the receptionist told me is that I have a balance and in order for them to see me I would have to pay. I told her that I did not have the money right now but I will do it as soon as I could. I told her that I would have to reschedule. She went and asked her manager, the office manager came and told me that I need to pay in a very rude way, not knowing what my current situation is. She said that they would not see me then. What shocked me the most is that I wanted to leave a message to the doctor and I was told by his secretary that they told him the situation and he said that unless I paid he wont see me. I can not believe that a doctor is more worried about the money then his patient. My insurance has been paying him thousand of dollars, what I owe is less than… 400 but I dont have it at this time. Im really sad I thought he was a good Doctor. Now I have to go and find another Doctor because I will never comeback to that office.

AFter the terrible treatment we got by the staff at the Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, we were lucky to find Dr. Melo who not only saved my husband's life (cancer) but he and his team were kind, caring, compassionate, extremely competent, and they treated him like a dear family friend, not just a random patient - they were wonderful, and no words can accurately describe the thankfulness and gratitude that we feel for his treatment and care.
