Dr. Jose Ramon Mestre, MD

The one thing Dr. Mestre has going for him is that he’s kind and really sympathetic to people suffering with gastrointestinal issues. However, it’s as though he doesn’t listen to patient’s symptoms and instead decides to do every test under the sun without consulting first what it couldn’t be just based on symptoms. There was no need to do a lactose/fructose/whatever -ose year when people tell him that they don’t have reactions to those or foods containing them. There’s no need to take excessive amounts of blood for testing purposes. One test is generally enough, not to mention they could easily consult the primary care doctor’s office and receive their information. There’s no need to force someone to have a colonoscopy when evidently, it’s either IBS or Crohn’s. Even then, those can be narrowed down further. Even when patients report no blood or anything like that, he assumes the worst which isn’t helpful to those with something not as major. All it does is place unnecessary stress on… his patient and make them loathe their time there. Furthermore, you would imagine that a doctor would stop trying to figure out what’s wrong and not deliberately ruin the patient’s remission period when they seemingly found what helps them. You’d imagine that once what he prescribes works for the patient that they would stop. One could call it determined to put a name to the symptoms, but I would personally call it unnecessary, stress-inducing, and painful. All in all, good if you want someone to force you to spend lots of money to figure out something simple but be very sympathetic, but horrible if you want minimal suffering for your child and actually care about school/work or how all this unneeded testing affects their child.

Dr. Mestre seemed genuinely concerned about my daughter, and he did perform some tests. However, he misdiagnosed her causing a few years of unnecessary misery for her. She was immediately diagnosed accurately when we eventually sought a second opinion. She received the correct treatment, completely ending her suffering. He probably does better diagnosing conditions that are more common and patients with symptoms that “fit in the box”.

I used Dr. Mestre years ago with my son he had Hirschrung Disease. He was Excellent.

My daughter has been a patient of Dr. Mestre's for years. He has been wonderful in treating her and when we have appointments. HOWEVER, the office staff has gone from bad to worse since he moved to Children's Hospital. Never had the office staff been friendly or helpful but now they are just rude and disrespectful. Scheduling is months in advance, phone messages not returned, and if you have a problem you probably need to go to the ER because you can't get through to a nurse or Dr. Mestre. Unfortunately, Dr. Mestre cannot be the caring doctor that he once was because you never get to see him. Time for a change.

We made an appointment 1 1/2 months prior to our actual appointment with the doctor, because that was the soonest he had for after school hours. Daughter was in pain and we couldn't wait any longer. Called to make an appointment with another doctor, at another medical group, on a Friday. Appointment was on Monday at 4pm and medical procedure was performed on Tuesday. I just received a bill for a NO SHOW from Dr. Mestre's office, which I was NEVER informed by the staff when the appointment was made, for $50.00. I would understand, had my daughter BEEN a patient of his, however, she has NEVER been seen by this doctor. They told me to find another doctor, lol!! I said "Thank you, we did"..... Find another doctor, don't go to this one!!!

Do not use this Dr. his office is the most unfriendly staff I have ever dealt with. He may be an average Gastro. but dealing with his unprofessional staff is not worth it, there are much better offices around, find someone else.

I would highly recommend Dr. Mestre to anyone who's child needs to see a GI Dr. He was wonderful with my son and made him feel relaxed and at ease. His bedside manner is wonderful! He performed a very through exam and asked and answered many questions, I never once felt rushed through like at many other Dr. Offices. His office was very"kid friendly" with many activities to keep them busy while we waited. I was very impressed with him and his staff. If he were not a specialist, I'd switch pediatrians today!

I took my 5 y.o. to see Dr. Mestre due to frequent complaints of stomach aches. He was wonderful with her. He made her smile and laugh and forget why she was there. While doing this he was also respectful and informative to me as a parent. I was already impressed, and then I received a return call from Dr. Mestre on a Friday night of a holiday weekend about a question that could have easily waited until Monday morning. This is definitely going above and beyond. Luckily for us, my daughter's problem has been an easy fix of following the diet recommended by Dr. Mestre. I definitely will recommend Dr. Mestre to anyone who has a child with GI problems.

Would not recommend this doctor ever. Referred by our dr. to run tests on our daughter. In almost a one month wait and three to four phone calls, about one per week, we have yet to get a call back with the results. We get the usual reply from the uncourteous staff, he is very busy and will get back to us. We finally had to call our dr. to see if he could get the results-still waiting...

He was extremely attentive to accuracy and detail, a thorough worker and a thorough analysis. Explained with great detail and in a way that we could understand completely. I do not want my child taking medicine unnecessarily and I did not have to worry about that with him.
