Dr. Joseph H Butterfield, MD

Dr Butterfield was horrible! He was uninterested, lacked compassion and judgement, dismissive of my illness and questions, and eventually stopped communicating when I had questions. I requested another doctor from Mayo but was denied. Patient response at Mayo was not helpful.

The most disinterested, unresponsive, supercilious of them all. Do not waste your time or money.

Very impressed, he listened and asked questions for our issue. He seemed to be really concerned to get to the bottom of the issues that I have fighting for the last three years.

I wish I had seen Dr. Butterfield years ago. I had been run through the mill with a vast array of symptoms looking like mastocytosis. I had evendrug myself accross an ocean to the Boston Clinic, where unfortunately they came up with shrugged shoulders, not for lack of trying. He is a bit shy, but is incredibly knowledgeable. I had been referred by an endocrinologist, who was also baffled by my array of symptoms. I let him work his magic, and let him ask the questions, and within one visit, (and a rare disorder), he pinpointed the disease by ordering one test, which not one doctor prior had even considered ordering. The test came back, he wrote me a letter and asked my GP to order three more, and I have drug myself back accross the ocean and half the continent to see him AGAIN. One appointment was all it took, after much of my adult life of bieng dismissed as simply getting old, or HOrmonal, this guy NAILED it! If you have your own agenda and years of mismanagement that you have… swallowed, donT see him. If you want a new fresh set of eyes, and ears, see this man, I would recomend him to see any of my family or friends. His area of expertise is complicated, and full of pitfalls. I see him tomorrow again and he will be hearing my praises. NOt everyone might be able to get the one trip diagnosis, but my disorder is rare! He found it when no one else could. My general GP was embarrassed when he heard that this guy figured it out in one appointment. He too is now a true believer and is looking forward to hearing about my appointment tomorrow. Grateful from the middle of the Pacific!

Dr. Butterfield is incompetent, rude, and he lacks any compassion at all. His ego is falsely inflated and he appears to enjoy making a devastating illness even more impossible to deal with, by refusing to consult with other doctors and by refusing to direct any patient care, even during multiple acute reactions while already admitted to the hospital. He has succeeded at frustrating and infuriating some of his own colleagues, my nurse care coordinator, my primary care physician, and my emergency care physicians. His intelligence and his bedside manner are beyond disgusting, to say the least. Many of the patients who receive care from Dr Butterfield rely on his treatment to keep them alive. Dr Butterfield realizes the importance of his decisions regarding patient care, and yet he still makes the choice to fail at providing adequate care. The fact that he is still practicing medicine is absolutely appalling. If Doctor Butterfield determines that your particular symptoms/diagnosis are… too difficult for him to figure out or manage, he will simply refuse to provide care. You will be at his mercy, while he gets his kicks from playing God with your life. I would advise you to go and see ANY other allergic disease specialist other than Dr Butterfield....even if they have a lot less experience. Dr. Butterfield is, by far, the worst physician I have ever encountered....and I've seen some awful ones. If I could give a rating of zero stars, I would.

Mr. Butterfield is one of the most competent doctors I have had the pleasure to deal with. His experience in the field of medicine is self-evident as he gets straight to the point with diagnosis and treatment options. I am honored to have been seen and taken care of by this doctor and his prompt, professional courtesy.

this doctor was rude - and his diagnosis was asthma - my hometown dr was so fed up with this I was sent to a specialist in Gr Rapids Mi who did the right diagnosis - I would not send my dog to this Dr and he should not be on staff at Mayo - I was told a yr after I met him that he was gone - I see he is still there - what a disgrace to this hospital - - - even a nurse told me he was not a very good dr and that I could change - wish I had - The Dr in Gr Rapids also said Mayo did not handle this well - and he said he would never go there again himself - that there are better DRs right in Gr Rapids - and he's right - he is one of the good ones - not this Butterfield - cannot tell you how rude he was - from the minute he walked into the room he was rude........never again -

I had read the reviews which I ignored because I wasn't looking for a great bedside manner just a competent doctor. Well he was not helpful , caring, or interested. I interrupted me repeatedly, I lost focus on what I hoped to get addressed! He was very rude and treated me like I was a bother, not a patient. Not what I expected from the Mayo Clinic.

This Doctor was rude,did not even bother to look at paperwork that was sent in advance,recommend following lab work over 3 months which is what my GP Doctor ws already doing for last 9 months!Complete joke and waste of my time!Consulted with Patient Affairs about his utter lacck of care and they said I could strt from scratch with different Doctor,But it might take awhile to be seen with someone else, What? How about an apology,how about we will help get you in with someone else. Really can't say anything good about Patient affairs either,they said Dr. Butterfield would be calling me in a couple of days, Nope never did. His secretary did, to which I had tons of questions she could not even answer. If I had only looked online at what others had to say I never would have wasted my time or energy. It did help to know it wasn't just me he is being rude and uncaring too. How this Doctor is allowed to work at what is supposed to be the best place in the world for healthcare is unknown.

I went to Dr. Butterfield for my allergy issues. He was very rude, did not listen to my issues or read any of my doctor's letters. It was a complete waste of time to see him and he gave me no answers. I left with a leaflet for the Allergy Hotline...that's it!!! He also called his wife and discussed dinner while I was sitting in the office tryng to tell him about my problems. He is a terrible doctor.
