Dr. Joseph Guarnieri, MD

My sister in law was seen by Dr. Guarnieri for an extremely swollen eye that was warm to the touch. He looked at it prescribed steroid drops and a very low dose of antibiotics and sent her on her way without a diagnosis and no clue. He told her to get tested for covid because we don’t know how covid will present itself and to not return to his office for a couple days until she had covid test results in her hand. I’m an ophthalmic technician and when I saw my sister’s eye and how swollen it was I immediately knew that this was Periorbital cellulitis and had nothing to do with covid. I sent her to Tulane where she was immediately diagnosed with Periorbital cellulitis and received a CT scan. This is dangerous and timing is crucial. How is it that a technician, an ER doctor, residents, med students and other ophthalmologists are all able to identify this yet this ophthalmologist has no clue. Patients that claim he is an amazing doctor were treated by him in the 1970s!!!! I think it’s time… for you to retire when you have to constantly send patients to other ophthalmologists because you are apparently incompetent. I have worked at another office that was constantly seeing patients that were referred by Dr. Guarnieri for second opinions of simple cases. If I left my sister in Dr. Guarnieri’s care who knows what could’ve happened. Let’s also talk about how unprofessional he is. I have worked for Dr. Guarnieri years ago and it is an extremely toxic environment, he yells at his staff in front of patients and makes rude and unnecessary comments constantly. Patients have apologized on his behalf for how he treated the technicians in front them. It blows my mind that he has had this practice running for this long.

Staff is friendly but doctor is rude, egotistical, impatient, and barks orders at both patients and staff. I got yelled at the entire visit and came away with questions he was too busy to answer. Will never go back to him. He told me my glasses prescription was all wrong when one of his staff told me I had 20/20 with glasses on. He’s the rudest professional I’ve ever dealt with.

I have been a patient here for four years, not only me but my entire family, yes there is a long wait but it's worth the wait , Dr Guarnieri gives you the best eye exam I ever had, the staff there is great they are friendly and very down to earth staff,

Dr Guarnieri was referred to me by a friend of his years ago. I was so pleased with him and his ability to solve the problems of the eye. I have been sending my family and friends to him ever since. My son in law has a inherited disease of the eye and sometimes has to put patches on his eye and stay in darkness for days on end. I didn't like what I saw and wasn't sure what exactly he had so I sent him to Good ole Dr Guarnieri.. That was in 2003. My son in law has not had his eye flare up ever since. Not saying the disease is gone. But whatever he did on that visit and the follow ups. Done the job. Thank you Doc.

Dr. Guarnieri was very thorough in his examination and was right on the money with his diagnosis. His staff was great also especially Shemka and Kaylee.
