I have made a conscious effort over the years to strive for excellence in dentistry. It has been a mantra for my life. I have literally traveled the world to learn from dentists whom I believe are real masters of dentistry. It has been and remains an interesting and exciting journey. I’ve learned from American dentists, as well as from the greats in Europe, South America, and Canada. For me, this education keeps dentistry fresh, not routine, and has allowed me to avoid the burnout I’ve seen among some colleagues. In the process of perfecting my craft, I’ve gained an enormous appreciation for the complexity of dentistry and the artistic, biochemical, psychological, engineering and material selection challenges — all performed on a micro-level and all of which can dramatically affect the final outcome. As Michelangelo once said, "Trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle!"

Dr. Joseph M. Heher
For over thirty years, Dr. Heher has provided Salisbury and Delmarva-area residents with beautiful, healthy smiles. He uses modern technology and proven therapies to deliver outstanding service and quality care. Dr. Heher enjoys exceeding patient expectations and creating smiles that look and feel completely natural. He is an accomplished author and has been published in both regional and national dental journals.
After receiving his dental degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland, Dr. Heher devoted three years of service as a Naval Dental officer at the U.S. Naval Station in Guam and the Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C. He began his private practice in Salisbury after completing his military service.
In 2009, Dr. Heher was invited to join the Dean’s Faculty at the University of Maryland Dental School, where he is now sharing his expertise with a new generation of future dentists. In October of 2010, Dr. Heher's skill was acknowledged by What’s Up? Eastern Shore magazine in a confidential poll of 140 dentists from the Eastern Shore asking who they would select if they themselves had to seek dental care. As flattering as that was, even more so was the fact that he was the only general dentist selected from the Salisbury area.
Professional Affiliations
Dr. Heher has served as president of both the American Society of Preventive Dentistry, Maryland Chapter and the Eastern Shore Dental Society. He is a member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, Maryland State Dental Association, Eastern Shore Dental Society, as well as the current president for the past ten years of the Salisbury Dental Study Group.
Continuing Education
Continued study helps Dr. Heher stay on the forefront of modern dentistry. He’s taken more than 2000 hours of post-graduate training in cosmetic dentistry, sleep disorder therapy, alleviation of dental apprehension, restorative dentistry, non-surgical periodontal therapy, cranial osteopathy, preventive dentistry, and nutrition. Every year Dr. Heher exceeds the minimum continuing educational requirements that the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners requires all dentists to complete over a three-year period.
As a devotee of dentistry, Dr. Heher has trained under some of the most renowned dentists in the world.
Family Life and Community Involvement
Dr. Heher has been married for over 30 years and has one daughter. His hobbies include photography, music, and dentistry. He realizes dentistry isn’t usually considered a hobby, but his passion for the field makes it an intrinsic part of his life.
