Dr. Joseph W Keyser, MD

I was a patient of Dr Keyser for over 20 years, successfully treated for depression. Were it not for his efforts, I would not have been able to function personally or professionally. Dr Keyser always made himself available and was flexible in scheduling appointments. I benefitted from both the medications he prescribed and the psychotherapy he provided. While Dr Keyser has his own philosophy and approach to medication informed by both education and practice (as do all providers), I found him to be open and responsive to questions I had about my course of treatment. During my treatment, Dr Keyser and I had numerous discussions about medications, which resulted in changed dosing and/or switched medication and/or additional medication as was appropriate at the time. Were it not for the fact that I moved out of the area, I’d still be seeing him on a regular basis.

I was a patient of Dr Keyser. He provided me with an understanding of how I could adjust my responses to life situations that caused me stress and anxiety. Dr. Keyser always took the time to discuss in depth my concerns and feelings during the office visits. I would definitely seek out his advice for any future issues I may have. Fortunately I am still able to manage situations based on his guidance.

I was treated by Dr. Keyser for a few months. After relocating back to NJ I needed to feel grounded and stable since my move was abrupt. He was very easy to talk to. He is funny and witty and has an interesting background. Our sessions were always full of conversation, never a silent moment in that office. He is articulate, insightful and compassionate. If you are looking for a good Psychiatrist with little dependency on the monster that is "Pharma," I recommend him. He is an organic take to therapy.

Dr. Keyser was a wonderful psychiatrist. I can't recommend him enough as he really helps and cares for his patients. He was super easy to get an appointment with and always put the patient's needs first. He's extremely knowledgeable and will actually help you instead of just prescribing the typical medications.

If you are looking for a Psychiatrist who deeply cares about his patients, then see Dr. Keyser. He is a extremely knowledgeable, competent, thoughtful and caring physician. Dr. Keyser, listens to my problems, understands my concerns and help to resolve the issues I would highly recommend Dr. Keyser.

Doctor Keyser feels that there is only one drug for Bipolar disorder. When I told him about issues I was having with the drug, he refused to switch me to something else. He told me to go down to what I learned from another psychiatrist was a dangerously low level and not in the therapeutic range. If I had stayed with Keyser, it is likely I would've had another relapse and wound up in the hospital. I only saw him a few times, but enough to know he's not someone to trust or rely on.

Was unable to provide appropriate options for sudden anxiety attacks and insomnia.

Obnoxious and pushy and didn't listen. Did NOT trust him to make medical decisions for me.

Dr. Keyser is a caring and compassionate doctor. At my appointments, he listens to all of my concerns and provides professional support and valuable insights. He responds to all of my emails and calls promptly. Before I came to this office, my moods alternated between an elevated mood with an increased energy level to a despondent mood where I was withdrawn, aloof and disinterested in participating in familiar activities or socializing with friends and family. Dr. Keyser correctly diagnosed my bipolar disorder a few years ago. He stabilized the extreme ups and downs of my bipolar disorder by monitoring the medication and adjusting the dosage. My concentration and moods improved significantly with his professional guidance. I would highly recommend Dr. Keyser.

The doctor was quick to diagnose multiple issues within first 20 minutes of my visit. He was also very quick to prescribe medication, even though it had been 5 years since my last physical exam. When I had strong side effects to the medication which impacted my ability to work, he did not think this was a problem. I have seen two doctors since leaving Dr. Keyser. Both have told me that (1) I was misdiagnosed and (2) he should have immediately stopped the medication given my side effects. Apparently the side effects I had indicated a severe - and possibly fatal - reaction to the medicine. We also ran into a billing issue, as he billed the insurance company for one additional office visit after I quit seeing him.
