Dr. Joseph Michael Maurice, MD

I was scheduled to have a urine test done to confirm my pregnancy. When I arrived at the clinic, I was told my husband could not accompany me due to the Covid-19 virus. This was after the nurse confirmed last week that my husband could be in attendance. I am a 37 year old African American woman and Dr. Maurice felt it was necessary to remind me how my pregnancy is considered "high risk". He also stated, I'm so sorry your "significant other" couldn't be with us today. Mind you, it's listed in my chart that I'm married. Not to mention I'm wearing two beautiful diamond rings on my finger. What hurt me the most is when he asked if my pregnancy was planned. He also asked 3 times to be exact, if this was this my first pregnancy... as if my answer would change. I've always had great things to say about the doctors at Rush Medical but Dr. Maurice left me feeling extremely disappointed. He will never see me again.

i was a patient of Dr. Maurice 4 years ago, in the beginning he was very kind, i was told i had a huge fibroid tumor, and i needed surgery to remove it. He suggested using the robot, which i had no problem with because the healing is supposed to be quicker. I went into surgery, and woke up to a room of silence, he came in shortly afterwards to tell me that i had adenomyosis and they couldn't remove anything, and that everything was going to be the same, his suggestion " hopefully you will get pregnant" tap on the shoulder and left the room. I was devastated. His residents followed up with me for the rest of the day, and actually had me released from the hospital the following day. I went home and became very ill, i had to be rushed back to the hospital, because my stomach was still asleep, stomach paralysis, i was in the hospital for the next 7 days, i never saw him again. i finally was released and tried to get back to my life, on my follow up appointment i was told to just… try to get pregnant , no sorry , no anything. i also have scars across my abdomen because of the robot surgery. I hope no one ever has to experience what i did.

I love this doctor. He was very fast and he explained everything to me so I could understand!!

I went for an ultrasound almost 2 weeks ago and found out from the radiologist that I had fibroid tumors that had gotten larger than they were the last time I had an ultrasound. I was shocked because I was unaware that I had fibroid tumors for almost 2 years or more and no one from the clinic felt the need to notify me of my circumstances. By the way, I've been a patient at Women's Health Care at Rush for almost 10 years. I have an IUD that I had placed by a doctor at the clinic. The first one I had was too low, so another doctor had to remove it using an ultrasound machine as her eyes for precision. Today I had to go back to the clinic because the IUD wasn't placed right the second time due to one of the fibroid tumors being in the way. Dr. Maurice tried to remove it but he could not. When he recommended surgical removal, I asked him about using the ultrasound machine instead. He was adamant about doing the surgery. I asked him are there any other options besides surgery and he said… there's no other options for him. Letting me know that it's either surgery or I need to get another doctor to figure it out. He was very short and didn't like the fact that I was asking questions and he felt challenged because I mentioned the ultrasound machine in front of his students and I asked him are there any other options besides surgery. What doctor would prefer the most invasive procedure before trying something less invasive that is requested by the patient? Dr. Joseph M. Maurice, MD, FACOG is very emotionally detached.

Dr Maurice did my robotic surgery and he was excellent. His bedside manner was phenomenal, and I would recommend him to any one seeking robotic surgery

I recently had a colposcopy by Dr. Maurice, a procedure that is a followup to an abnormal pap smear, where they take tissue samples from your cervix to test for cancer and abnormal cells. I waited 30 minutes to be seen by Dr. Maurice. While I laid there with my feet in the stirrups and he examined me with the scope he smacked on gum. Definitely unprofessional and I question if that is even sanitary. He dumped me back on his nurse to answer any followup questions after the procedure.

I was seen by Dr. Maurice on an emergency call while I was in tears and the first thing out of his mouth was, "You know I am supposed to be in the delivery room and I made an exception to see you". He then examined me and gave me his diagnosis in a very rude tone. I asked him if he could answer some questions and not be so cold and he walked out of the room!!! I have never in my life experienced this. I am 7 months pregnant and I was so upset I could not work that day. He had absolutely no bedside manner and an attitude. I had a terrible experience with this practice and I want women to know what happened. Doctor's should not be allowed to get away with treating patients this way, especially firt time moms!! He should not be allowed to work with new mothers, he was awful.
