I went to Dr. Small because I had sudden distortion and hearing loss in one ear. He removed a bit of debris from my ear canal, which didn't fix the problem. Then, he tested my high frequency hearing with 3 high frequency tones and told me I was "good to go." My hearing was still terrible, and I asked how long I should wait for improvement before calling him. He said "a month or two." I decided to get a 2nd opinion. That ENT delivered the bad news: I had severe low frequency hearing loss. Also, if I had been treated appropriately when I saw Dr. Small, there was an 80% probability of recovering my hearing. But, by the time I got an appointment with the 2nd doctor, it was too late for the standard treatment. There is a very high probability that I will not regain my hearing. I searched the Internet, and found site after site that explained what a doctor should do when presented with the symptoms I had. It's "an emergency" they said. Treatment with oral steroids needs to be given as soon… as possible and within 4 weeks to have any effect. Dr. Small should have known.
