Dr. Joseph Yu, MD

Prior to my procedure, I read these negative reviews, and almost cancelled my appointment. I’m glad I didn’t because Dr. Yu and his staff were professional, thorough in explaining the procedure, efficient, and friendly. The procedure was performed on time and completed ahead of schedule. I’d highly recommend Dr. Yu, and found him to be quite the opposite of what these reviews suggest.

All the reviews hit the nail on the head. He asked questions without waiting for me to fully answer and basically concluded I just need to lose weight to fix all my problems, without me being able to explain my weight gain is unexplained and likely related to what’s going on. Not how I wanted to interact while lying on a gurney feeing vulnerable.

Sadly, I must agree with the negative comments here. It took so long to get in to see a specialist and this was my experience: Before any introductions or asking how I was, I was immediately chastised for not being at the office 15 mins early to fill out paperwork - as I was finishing up my paperwork when Dr. Yu walked in. The truth is, I filled out my paperwork two months earlier and it couldn’t be printed out at the office AND I WAS there 15 minutes early. So, as I started to fill out paperwork all over again, I got called back 10 minutes early. Dr. Yu was also condescending about the fact that I couldn’t remember the name of the facility that gave me a barium swallow test (which is a part of the same hospital) and when I asked him if it was in my records, he replied that he didn’t have time to look at my records because he has SO MANY people to see. (That really makes a patient feel as if their circumstances are not important to him. Though he had plenty of time to chastise my… previous doctors for not sending me to a specialist years earlier.) I felt very rushed and not listened to. I did not get to finish telling him where I felt pain before he just jumped on the first statement I made and ran with it - he did not ask me if I experienced pain anywhere else. I likely looked troubled when he then spoke condescendingly to me about having to ask questions as “doctors have to be detectives to determine what’s wrong by asking so many questions.” As a 50 year-old woman with medical issues, I’m pretty well aware of that at this point. I would have appreciated it if he'd asked me more about my specific reason for visiting. He didn’t even take the time to ask if I was already taking any of the precautions and eating the diet that outlined in the pamphlet he handed me. (I already do not eat any of those foods - this was not helpful at all.) I would rather wait another 4 months to see another specialist than return to Dr. Yu.

As I was laying on a gurney, in a hospital gown, awaiting my proceduce, Dr. Yu took the opportunity to lecture me about how long I waited to get my first colonoscopy. He quoted colon cancer statistics and beligerently asked why I had never had the test before now. I felt attacked and didn't know how to explain the "why" of my decision. Please save yourself from this rude, uncaring doctor and see someone else.

Dr. Yu refused to look at and diagnose a bacterial infection. He was angry with me because HE didn't know how to order a simple lab test. He called me to complain that my request for a test would cause him to have to do paperwork. He mocked me and ignored my symptoms. He would not even look at the bacteria photos and samples I had prepared for microscopic evaluation. Further, he went directly against my instructions not to cut anything inside my colon until I could identify the parasite. He cut a polyp within 10 minutes after I specifically told him not to do that, (while I was under anesthesia). There was bleeding after colonoscopy. I hope the infection did not travel and spread through the open wound. I finally learned from another doctor what this is and it is quite serious. I will have a third opinion later this week. I can only hope the antibiotic treatment received from my second opinion Dr. will help mitigate any damage Dr. Yu caused. I did not deserve the stress he… caused me, nor did I deserve to be treated with such disregard. Dr. Yu literally "couldn't care less". Save yourself and find another GI Dr.

Dr. Yu is a "sea gull" type...meaning he flies in ruins your day and then checks out. he seems to value his own title and position than he does his patients.
