Dr Berman abuses his patients and NYP cover up for him.

I was misdiagnosed by this physician, and, as a result, was steered in the wrong direction, including with meds. The doctor stared at me as I talked and offered no feedback. His treatment plan wasn’t working, and he was trying to “win time,” as he put it. The meds he prescribed were not working either. I was hospitalized on his recommendation with 35 rounds of ECT which did absolutely nothing for me. Later I realized that, due to the wrong diagnosis given by him at the time, it was not surprising they weren’t effective. I still can’t believe I went through all that hardship for nothing. Putting me thru ECT was his way of “winning time.” I complained of pain and he would only ask what I meant, but would prescribe nothing nor offer any advice or referrals. None, period; he was mostly silent and thoughtful but not very verbal, interactive, or helpful with what I needed. As his patient, I almost lost my life but got out in time to find better care. I gave him two stars because he… was a nice person and seemed to want to help. In the end, however, he was hardly capable of relieving the symptoms and pain of my depression.

Very thorough, caring and honest. A levelheaded psychiatrist, absent of any psychobabble or ideology, with an analytical mind that enables him to come to conclusions logically about things. A brilliant and informed diagnostician but open minded enough to not jump to conclusions prematurely. On the faculty at Columbia and is up to date with the modern modalities and treatment. Forgiving of an emotional outburst I had with him via email when in the grips of being ill and was still willing to help me and didn’t hold it against me though still expected me to take responsibility for my actions which I did. Felt he had a solid understanding of what was going on at the end of our session and what my struggles are and appreciated that he said he would continue to think about it after I left and would relay his thoughts and recommendations to my current psychiatrist. Upheld the Hippocratic Oath and I believe he went into medicine for the right reasons.

Dr. Berman is an amazing doctor. He is incredibly intelligent and highly able to treat depression. He is also enjoyable to spend time with, has a good sense of humor, and is easy to relate to. Overall Dr. Berman gets an A+ from me!
