Dr. Joyce Barlin, MD

My rating is actually less than 1 star. I had to put something down. Providers do not respect patients wishes and force the into situations they are not comfortable with.

I don’t recommend Dr. Barlin. She had no sympathy for scan anxiety. I would have a cat scan and would not get the results until I saw her a week later. She refused to call me even if the results were good. She had no respect for patient dignity. She would discuss important treatment information while you sat on the table without pants with a paper sheet over you. She did not present treatment options in a sensitive way. She told me that chemotherapy may or not help, but if I had a recurrence, it would be fatal. I still don’t like that a laparoscopic hysterectomy was performed on me when cancer was suspected. It likely upstaged my cancer. When I had a recurrence, I went to NYOH.

I have no idea why anyone would give Dr. Barlin a bad review. You beat it! And because of her. I find her to be warm and engaging. Everyone in the office is welcoming, knowledgable, and kind. She is a doctor, not your emotional support system. Holistic cancer treatment? She knows her stuff. And the chemo gave you the side effects.And you’re alive.I am so grateful that she is treating me.

If you are considering care by this physician make sure you get a second opinion before moving on with her. She doesn’t review your records prior to your visit, view or request your scans. She bases your care plan on her text book knowledge of “standard of care” for your tumor type. She doesn’t consider new research findings. She says she will respect your decisions but she will only do what she wants to do to you and if you don’t like it you can go find another doctor. She does not think outside of the box and she does not partner with you in your decisions on your quality of life and the care you wish to receive. She has a cold expressionless bedside manner. If you cry she will hand you a tissue and act like you mean nothing to her as her patient. A doctor like this is not cut from the kind of cloth that makes an empathetic caregiver to a population of people who fear their life is ending. The nurses who work there don’t respect your dignity either. The whole team functions like a… dysfunctional group who don’t see each other’s patients and you can’t switch doctors within this practice. It’s not “allowed”. Dr. Barlin is not nice if you disagree with her. You’ll see a huge personality switch. I feel sorry for our community not having a better GYN oncoogy center.

I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. I begged for other options besides chemo and radiation and Dr. Barlin wouldn't even consider anything except chemo & radiation. I was scared and listened to her. The treatment was awful to say the least, but I survived it. No one told me of the after effects it could have on my body/mind. Due to the chemo and radiation, I have been thrown into abrupt menopause, which from what I understand, is about 10X worse than normal menopause because there is no time for your body to ease into menopause. I went to see Dr. Barlin yesterday for follow up. I am healing nicely, except for my hormones - my job, marriage and sleep are suffering. I asked for help and she said she was going to put me on birth control (I'm 47 and have my tubes tied) Not only that, but I explained to her that birth control messes up my hormones. I cried to her and she could have cared less - I begged for something more natural and her responses was "If you want natural you… need to pursue that on your own" I asked if she could write a note explaining to my male boss what is going on with me and she refused - saying that my cancer treatment is done and she won’t write a note for me. What a horrible day. I am a mess! I did exactly what she said...never missed a chemo or radiation appointment, and did everything they said, but I am left with a body that is destroyed by treatment they pressured me into and now offer zero support - avoid Dr. Barlin - she does not care about you!!!

she is a good surgeon but has a very negative outlook. I feel does not offer patients much hope -very textbook. I find the whole atmosphere of the office to be depressing and would not recommend anyone to receive chemotherapy there for this reason.

I can't praise this doctor enough. Extremely competent yet kind and gentle.
