Dr. Joyce Ann Oshaughnessy, MD

I have been a patient of Dr. Joyce O'Shaughnessy for over 20 years. I have nothing but good things to say about her and the staff at Texas Oncology. Dr. O'Shaughnessy is a patient centered oncologist who solicits and acknowledges patient concerns and addresses the individual as well as medical treatment. Throughout my treatment, including chemo, radiation and current screening, I have always been satisfied with her willingness to explain, in layman terms I might add, decisions regarding medication, tests, scans, biopsies, etc. As an Oncologist I assure you that she is brilliant and at the top of her field. She has published research in several medical journals including The New England Journal of Medicine and several others. As a person I can attest that she is kind, caring, humorous. As a woman who had aggressive breast cancer many years ago and is lucky enough to still be her patient, I will say she is a beautiful "sparkle" shining light on a disease that will never - ever - … overshadow her. Dr. O'Shaughnessy is a great doctor. She is up to date on the latest treatments. She is the reason that I was able to go into remission, despite being Stage IV. After many years, the initial treatment plan she devised is still working. I liken her to the Looney Toons Tasmanian Devil. She spins in, takes care of business, and then spins out. You're left going, what? But her treatments work! That said . . . She is incredibly busy. She overloads her schedule. Expect to see her nurse practitioner more than you see her, even when you specifically request an appointment with her. I went six months without seeing her (monthly appointments) because I was always fobbed off on the nurse practitioner. My last appointment as her patient, I made a 1 pm appointment at the direction of her nurse because she saw how I was being made to wait an hour or more. She told me that if I made the 1 pm, that was the first appointment after lunch so minimal waiting. My appointment that day was… with Dr. O after having seen her NP that last three appointments. I arrived in plenty of time. I was taken back to my room a little after 1. And then I waited. I waited. I waited. At 4 pm - that's right 3 hours - I told the nurse I was leaving. She asked me not to and went to find Dr. O. She assured me I was next and she would be right in. 20 minutes later, the NP walks in. Not Dr. O, the nurse practitioner (no offense to her, she's a lovely person, but I do expect to see the oncologist sometime!) The NP does the appointment. I walk out at 4:45pm. I was the last patient in the office. Even the front desk people were gone. Not a single person in the entire waiting room. I switched oncologists that day.

Knowledgeable does not even begin to describe Dr. O! I received treatment from her over seven years ago and hardly a day goes by without my remembering some bit of advice that she offered. I am beyond thankful for her knowledge and experience. She is very thorough and supportive. Fabulous doctor and human being!

Dr. Oshaughnessy is very knowledgeable, but throughout the past 5 years, I feel the office is overwhelmed with its case load. I call many times trying to schedule an appointment, to only get a recording, to never get a call back. I was told they would call me back to set up an office visit regarding a shot to build up my bones, but the office never called me, that was nearly 6 mths ago. I had a chest X-ray with a an abnormal findings, was told to come back in 6 mths for follow up and for another test, yet I have called 3 times, and have yet to speak to anyone. If I was to become ill again or anyone in family, I would not use Dr. Oshaughnessy, she is too busy to treat her patients.

Before visiting Dr. O'Shaughnessy, I wanted to find a corner to go into so I could cry. After speaking with her, I was completely relieved and optimistic about my plan of care.
