Dr. Juan Carlos Sabogal Tamayo, MD

"I saw Dr. Juan Sabogal for a consult regarding a cervical biopsy. It was my understanding this appointment was a consult to explain the procedure, which consists of taking tissue samples from inside and outside the cervix. He spent the first twenty minutes of our appointment explaining to me why it was "unusual" for me to have extreme anxiety regarding the procedure, and then he shamed me for asking if I could be sedated for the procedure, saying "no one has ever had a problem with this before; the procedure is basically like a pap", which I know it is NOT anything like a pap; paps don't cause bleeding and cramping. He told me "I have never experienced this in my 20 years of practice. Your anxiety is really getting in your way". He then proceeded to ask me if I was a victim of sexual assault and said that was the cause of me being "difficult". While in the appointment, he called Kaweah Delta (the hospital I was told could sedate me for the procedure) and said he had someone being… difficult in the office and that the hospital didn't have a "scope" for the procedure. While on the phone he said "it would be like someone wanting an appi in our office" to further shame and humiliate me; he also took his mask off while he made that phone call. The day prior, I was told by a different (female) professional, at the same practice in Exeter, Ca, that I would be able to receive sedation and have the procedure at the hospital in question. After clearly expressing to him that I thought it was a consult and that due to my mental health and extreme anxiety that I was not comfortable attempting the biopsy without sedation, he proceeded to say "Well, what I would like to do is give the biopsy a try right now and see how it goes". I had to tell him "I am not okay with that, and I do not consent to this", he continued to humiliate me and invalidate my wishes for the remainder of the visit. Male gynecologists have always made me nervous, and he confirmed every one of my fears. He did not listen to my concerns, he invalidated my anxiety and concern, and attempted to intimidate me into having a painful and invasive procedure. I never want another person to experience what I experienced. Many people in the valley are undocumented and are unaware of their rights as a patient, and I fully believe he has taken advantage of that; if he treated me like that the first time meeting me I am 100% confident he has treated other women like that.

He's very rude

This doctor was awful when delivering my nephew! I was there all along and he only checked on my sister twice. He didn't give my sister a shot for my nephews lungs since he was a premature baby. He didn't give her meds to stop contractions or speed them up. He was in a bad mood every time, even during the delivery. I would not recommended him! I gave him one star for delivering my nephew but that's about it.
