Dr. Rowen is Assistant Dean for Educational Affairs. She is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the clinical clerkships and assuring the integration of basic and clinical science across all four years of the curriculum. Dr. Rowen is a dedicated and excellent teacher with a long track record of mentoring students. She served for ten years as Clerkship Director for Pediatrics and led the change of the clerkship from a four-week inpatient rotation to an eight-week combined ambulatory and inpatient rotation. Her contributions to medical education have been recognized at the national level. She is a member of the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics and served as editor of their Journal Club. Dr. Rowen is an inspirational teacher at all levels as exemplified by her multiple teaching awards. She received the Golden Rattle Award by the Pediatrics residents for best teacher, a Course Award for Excellence in Lecturing Pathobiology and Host Defense, and the Department of Pediatrics Award for Excellence in Support of Pediatric Education. She has also been selected multiple times by the medical students for the American Medical Womens Association (AMWA) Women in Medicine Award for excellence in teaching, mentoring and the awareness of gender equity, and was recently honored with this award at the 2009 Honors and Awards and the White Coat Ceremony, where she also served as the keynote speaker. Among her many accolades, Dr. Rowen was the Senior Faculty Marshal at the 2009 School of Medicine Commencement.Dr. Rowen has played a valuable role within our institution. She provided outstanding assistance in our institutional self-study for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) site visit in December, 2006. The LCME is the accrediting authority for medical education programs leading to the MD degree in U.S. and Canadian medical schools. In addition, she worked arduously in successfully placing our students in rotations throughout the state in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.Dr. Rowen is a well-respected physician and was recently selected as one the Best Doctors in America for 2009-2010. As a researcher, Dr. Rowen has made important contributions in developing effective therapies for neonatal infections. Dr. Rowen earned her MD degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine at Baltimore in 1986 and was an intern, resident, and chief resident in Pediatrics at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. She subsequently completed a Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellowship and served as a Research Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Rowen joined the UTMB faculty in 1996.
