THE TRUE STORY---A year before I moved to Corvallis with my mother Gretel Marchbanks--my friend Dr. Taylor Porter in Topeka, Ks. gave my mother a "diagnosis at a distance" of Alzheimer's disease. I shared this with my brother Phil (but not with my sister Dru) as Dru was too immature and irresponsible to be facing this beforehand. Phil--however--had to be told -- "BE PREPARED !" In my mother's Corvallis life--Dr. Watkins and her friend Dr. Susan South (who was my mother's psychotherapist) really were "The Indispensable Two"--each in their way getting to know my mother's extraordinary life story and learning to appreciate her as someone loved and respected by so many people through the years.
